Which 2016 kite/bar for Freeride (all-around)?

Postby bpchilds » Tue Dec 29, 2015 3:47 pm

Hello,

I am in the market for a new 12M kite.

My requirements:
Low end
Upwind
Low-medium bar pressure
Huge boosting
Quick turning (need to master my jump transitions)
Downwind drift

My stats:
6'0
220lbs
Intermediate
Mainly Twintip riding (would like to get into foiling)

Can everyone tell me their reviews of the following 2016 kites:
- Cabrinha Switchblade
- Naish Pivot
- Slingshot RPM
- F-One Bandit
- Others?

Past kites:
Cabrinha Switchblade

I have tried 2016 SB and loved it but would love to hear reviews/feedbackof other Freeride/All-around kites.

Thank you for all your input in this topic,
B

12m is my most used kite, so I now have 2 . I have a 2015 Flite that I love, and it matches your criteria list perfectly. Only issue with flite is strong, gusty wind, it's manageable but the kite really is a handful in those conditions. This is my favorite kite in smooth steady wind.

I also have a quiver of SBs that as we all know are slow, with med to high bar pressure but are great at many things. In the spring and fall we get a fair amount of gusty wind here in the NE, its tough to beat a SB in those conditions. I have had only one chance to fly my new 12m SB.
It felt about the same as my 2014, maybe a tad faster and less bar pressure, but definitely still that SB feel..

I got into foiling and my main kite went from a 12m Naish Pivot to a 9m Cabrinha Velocity. Now if I can keep the kite in the air, I can foil.

I only mention that because you sort of blended foiling into the equation the way you framed the question.

I now think of kite choice mostly in terms of foiling and if I might sometimes use it with a twin tip, versus imagining how the kite will work with a twin tip and sometimes foiling. Makes a big difference in how you choose to spend your money

Molly,

That is a good call. I do have a smaller kite i can tool around on for Foiling. Maybe just for for the twin tip then.

Pivot does everything well. It's a fantastic jumper with tons of low end. It pretty much checks all the boxes you mentioned.
In addition it had great hangtime with forgiving landings which is great for practicing new things.

My favorite kite so far is the Epic Renegade 13m LTD 5G. this kite ticks all your boxes. My best advice is not to buy any kite until you try this kite along with any others you are interested in.

Just be careful, you might like it so much you end up buying all of them... I did

Cheers
Pete

P.S. I also used to own Cab SBs (2013, 8m and 10m). part of the reason we went with the Renegade was for my wife, she was able to ride twice as long on the Renegades because of the lighter bar pressure compared to the SB, and the relauch of the Renegade blows the SB out of the water.

In that case, I enjoyed my 12m Pivot more than I enjoyed my 12m Switchblade. I've heard that the brand new 12m F-One is really good though, if I were going to buy a twintip freeride kite I'd want to ride a few before I committed to buy. That's a lot easier said than done, but I know there was a thread where a company was renting current model-year equipment and they had a bunch of brands to try.

Also don't write off the Velocity...it doesn't turn as quickly as other kites in the larger sizes, but my 9m has a huge wind range and is great at riding powered up, does okay in the surf, and boosts AMAZINGLY well, plus does great with the foil. It's built to be light weight, so it's not as durable as the Switchblade. I basically consider it a lighter, more high performance version of a switchblade.

I'd say the Switch Nitro5 12m if you want bigger boosting than drift. Mine drifts fine with some bar input and sheeting out. If you want a better wave kite with less boosting pop the Element4 is also a great kite but for what you're after I think you'd like the low end, upwind, boosting the Nitro5 has(and for half the price of the other kites/bar you are looking at)! :D
