I was going fast on strapless in a shallow water, kite pulled me of the board. Had to jump off. I though I was landing on soft sand heels first. But apparently sand was hard packed. 6 months later my heel still hurts a bit.

I guess in theory having the straps a bit loose could reduce the chance of injury, but unless you are basically strapped to the board as a boot in most cases your foot still pops out on impact. I have crashed in any possible way and I used to have my straps very tight - never had any issues. That obviously doesn't prove anything, but I wouldn't worry too much. People do break their ankles etc. kitesurfing, but it certainly doesn't happen often. I have seen people getting injured smashing into the beach, crashing into reefs etc., but I have never personally seen or heard of any issues related to straps being too tight.
