For the record, I think Andries Fourie (in lime green vest) saved Lewis' life by keeping him above water.

Welgedaan Andries.

It's not just about no one was doing cpr to force air into his lungs

CPR teaching these days is that if the person is vomitting or you don't have a barrier for doing mouth to mouth then just do chest compression.

Until someone says that Lewis's heart had stopped then it's more of being unconscious in the water and breathing this in. Let's just praise Andrea and wish a good and speedy recovery from Lewis

Well that is true for basic CPR but if a patient is vomiting they need to be rolled over to their side so you can clear the air way. EMS would have done that if they had been there. I still can't believe that they did not have EMS on standby at the event for just such an event.

He was drowning; lungs react poorly to seawater, "ARDS", pneumonia etc.... ventilator required, sedation is indicated. Hopefully not because of severe Tbi/brain swelling, the other big indication for sedation in this setting. Statement given that initial imaging showed no brain injury, time will tell....

News is that he's going to have a tracheotomy this weekend. Not sure why he would need a hole in his neck? I've spent a few weekends with Lew when he's coached for our local club, genuinely lovely guy and superb coach. Wishing him all the best, it's heartbreaking to think of someone with such a lust for life in a coma.

Wondering out loud if a helmet would have made a difference?
