why don't kite bags have line spools?

Postby consumer » Tue Feb 23, 2016 5:33 am

You guys might remember me from my questioning "Why are pump bases flat?" viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2374806

Here's my new question, why don't we create a spooling system for lines in our kite bags?

My terrible description of what I am envisioning:

1. a spool integrated into the kite bag that can attach to each line separately.
2. As you turn the spool all lines are wound up without tangles.
3. at completion, the bar pulls into a neat recess near the spool and is held.

next time you take your kite out the lines are ready to go, and do not need to be walked out.

Dude that would actually be kinda cool. You can just pull your bar directly from the bag and boom all lines are there, separated.

Someone made this thing in an earlier post, I think it would prolly be easier than a reel though

Classic technique used for rigging a kite when launching from a jet ski or boat.

Does anyone keep their Bar lines attached to the kite when folding it all up? Ive seen some guys do this before. Never really tried it (or the Cab video) before... seems like the time saved vs standard line walk-out / connect is not that much and introduces some risk if you drop or don't pay close attention.

Generally Im in no rush to get out there and like knowing all my lines are fully dialed in for a safe launch. Extra 2 mins is worth it for me.

What is the goal here ?

To leave the lines attached to the kite, or not ?

Assume you are talking lines not attached - as if attached you just roll the lines on the bar as usual, thats all there is to it - and they are ready to go the next time if you just pack it down and up with a bit of care.

I see a huge problem having it integrated in the bag:

Most dont have a bar and lines for each kite.
I dont want to use the money nor find it makes sense, so for my 6 kites I only got 3 bars, different line lengths and stuff, for different uses, maybe 4 as I got a lightwind one too for special occasions (dont thrash your old bars - works perfect for something like this).

So say you got 5 or 6 kites in bags, and you had your lines spooled in some of them, then you have to bring ALL your kites (with bags no matter if lines attached or not) to the beach each time, in case you want to change to one of the kites where the lines are not spooled in the kitebag, well, even if you KNOW what size to use on a given day, and it has no lines - you need to bring an extra kite to get the lines/bar with you

This is one of the reasons I usually deattach my lines every time - as I dont know which size I am gonna use the next day - apart from being a bit safer/easier to check your lines condition.
But on kites where I only use one specific bar for the same kite (say a foil kite), I leave the lines attached always.
Also, if packing down to drive to another wavespot nearby on the same day, I leave the lines attached so super speedy to rig the same kite up 5min later on the other spot :thumb:

The different proposed linewinders is a much better idea, if you want to avoid walking your lines out twice, IMO :naughty:

You know it only takes 2 minutes to roll your lines out right?

Hey it's worth a crack who knows what may come of it.

But for me..as soon as I get a new kite I throw the stupid bag into the shed and put it into a big XXL duffel bag...can roll kites up real loose, easy to put away.

I always take at least two kites down (sometimes three if conditions are weird), with two bars. Combinations of 22,24 and 27 lines and two boards, my TT and my Nugget. I then consider the windspeed and type, water conditions, then rig depending on what style I'm gonna do given the conditions. I may even change the bar ends/bar size on the one I choose. Narrows down the right kite, bar length, line length and board to use. Used to run three TT's but hey like to be a try hard strapless weirdo now when I can, so just use a main TT and the nugget.

PLus I use an electric pump, so as the kite is pumping I'm laying out lines anyway.(to an exact pressure everytime).. PLus I use this rolling out of lines process to do a safety check of the bar/lines and if anything needs replacing.

But hey...even better mechanise the spool..hit a button..rolls up your lines for you lol!
