1st of all, be VERY carefull with the tap water, use bottled water for EVERYTHING!
We thought we were precautious enough, but obviously, should have used bottled water to rince salad, or even rince after brushing teeth... Be carefull of ice cubes as well (though most places use filtered water for these, but better ask and make sure).
Rented an appartment in Porto Antigo residence, which was very nice, but pricey, you have way cheaper options. But in any case, try to stay in town center, near this zone: they have developped residences and hotels a little further away just out of town, I passed them everyday I went to kite beach, and they looked empty and depressing. I was happy I did not book there as intended first because of the cheap price (not sure they're even open now?). Some people I met there were staying at apartHotel ponta preta, or an hotel next to it, and they said they were happy with it.
If your wave clinic is with Mitu, you're lucky, he's the best teacher I've encountered kiting.
Other than that, enjoy!

Rent a place with airBNB, cheaper and better locations than most hotels.
And i must say I was a bit sad to see so many new hotels in construction this winter, being there are quite a few empty ones already.

Stay in or close to Santa Maria for ease and convenience, although there are a lot of taxis if you are out of town as you could be quite remote.

It amazes me they built hotels out of town and a way from the beach, many of these are empty. Perhaps they are expecting a rush!

Sal is good for kiters/windsurfers and sun seekers, but it is a little baron to say the least!
A book I read said something about "the difference between Sal and Mars is that some believe Mars is capable of sustaining life!"

I've been there a few times. I have seen the police catch a guy who snatched a hand bag, he was dealt with rather swiftly and put into the van!
I also know of patio furniture being stolen from ground floor rooms.

Not heard of any kite gear stolen from the beach.

I wouldn't put things in 'temptations way', particularly on your terrace or balcony, especially if you are not around.
