They were not very experienced kitesurfers, at least one of them that I knew she wasn't. It was a stupid accident that it happened within seconds, no one could possibly thought that it is possible to loose the life like that.

Such sad news - Tarifa is in shock :(

One of the victim's friends is calling for the kitesurfing community to lobby for better safety and wants her appeal to be shared:

I don't think it's that they we're unwilling to punch out, they did and were so tangled in the lines it didn't help them.

alamos_kiter wrote:Tragic story, I got this message from our kite group, from a guy who was there: they were kiting in el charco, the lagoon of rio Jara. The wind had dropped completely, they landed their kites and were going back to the parking, passing the exit of rio Jara, carrying their kites, bar and lines in their hands. Due to the very high tide in the lagoon and rio Jara, caused by lots of rain, the current at the exit of rio Jara washing out to sea was super strong. Normally it's plenty strong, with the rain it was super strong. When they attempted to cross the exit they were swept into the sea, where there were 2m shore break. The kites and lines which they held in their hands got tangled around them. People shouted at them to let go of the kites and cut the lines, but they said no, they didn't want to let go of their kites not to lose them. They got tumbled in the shore break with their kites and lines tangled around them, and drowned.

Another message: kiting was forbidden in rio Jara already but not enforced; now the local police will enforce the ban of rio Jara and the lagoon. Keep clear.

Kite safe

Very sorry to read this. Rest in piece. Condolances to the family and friends.

If this is all true (and I have no reason to believe it is not true) I would not call this a "kitesurfing accident" as it has mostly to do with misjudgement of nature's forces while trying to cross a river and not with kitesurfing in itself...

And I'm not signing shit. This was not a kitesurfing accident, nor do we need kitesurfing being governed or controlled by anyone.

very sad - RIP.

The outlet can be very strong, so much so that I have seen it produce a stopper wave & people boogie board on it. I have seen lots of people cross the outlet with different degrees of success. The effect of the outlet is sometimes noticeable on the sea when kiting close in - dumpy waves/undertow.

Agree with the above, this was a beach tragedy, arguably made worse by what the poor souls were carrying (kite lines)

Tarifa kite community is trying to get the response time down. I hear it took the ambulance half an hour to get there after 112 was called by several persons.

I also agree that it's a beach tragedy, but surely the town could use some of the fees and revenue it receives to keep hundreds of kiters (who provide a great deal of revenue) safe in 'off season' (Tarifa still charges the schools in off season) and not just for sunbathers in peak season? Or just look at it as people (not just kiters) still use the beach out of the summer months so warrant a degree of safety cover.

It will be tough to juggle and put the community at risk of regulation, but if in need it would be better to not just have other kiters to rely on if anyone gets in trouble!
