Points for the Haiku Grigori.....

Unfortunately I agree with ya. We've since relocated to the Caribbean for kite vacations and probably not looking/going back.

It's been real.
no pun intended

No more visas required for US citizens traveling to Brazil.
You like downwinders? Now that’s heaven.

It seems odd that anyone would abandon kiting trips to a 50-mile island because a few dozen homes will have a view of the new bridge (increasing the reliability of access to the island), but to each his own. I'm just fine with fewer kiters on the water at Hatteras Island, so have fun and enjoy kiting wherever you go. :thumb:

I'm thinking short lines , keep the kite low and you can sneak right under and out.

Where the bridge goes you should be able to even walk under it with kite on water. It's pretty shallow there.
And launches were nice. And ability to ride on NE winds without having to drive to Frisco. And close proximity to the ocean side sso family can just walk over to enjoy beach. That's what made that spot so desirable.

I don't think many would give up OBX because of that. People would ride a bit further to Waves and Salvo and occasionally would snap good launches from someone else who misses to reserve a house. Folks who are used going to Avon and Buxton will still be coming there.

Yeah I'm not fully writing Hatteras off. I'm just bummed the spot I've been staying at for close to 20 years is now shit canned because of a bridge. This is something I couldn't have imagined ever happening when I learned to kite there in 2002. There are a few other factors at play, a few I've previously mentioned earlier in this thread. Ease of getting there, less reliable winds, increasingly busy spots, other family activities and even temps are part of my choice to kite elsewhere.

Hey not baggin on it at all. I love that place.

(but I'm starting to love this place even more.....)

Any of one still think this bridge is a bad idea? Lets see. 10s of people who built an investment property in a flood zone will have their soundside view diminished versus 10 of thousands of people stranded or denied access to OBX. Yes it is a temporary solution. The OBX has probably 30 years max until sea level rise makes it inaccessible. Bring on the bridge and more like it.

Not a solution because non exist.

Lol.
Here on the east coast we have both erosion and land subsidence in parts of the NC/VA area.
But there is no significant sea level rise so far, and “it’s gonnna happen” has been ringing false the last few decades.

Whether it's erosion or sea level rise or (as is most likely the case, both), the effect on Hatteras Island is the same. Access to the island has been shut down since last Saturday, schools are closed, some homes and businesses are again flooded. All as the result of a no-name nor'easter. The new bridges will help but, as SSK says, there is no long term solution to preserve the island as we know it today.

I don’t think anyone is advocating against raised highway. It’s just didn’t really need to go through an excellent spot over water and could have stretched over land - through same campground and over the swamp in Mirlo Beach all the way out.
It wouldn’t have cost $145M if it went through land.
But also a lot of that land is Federal and you guys are not in control.

Even with the bridge - Avon and Frisco will get flooded jus as often and island will be just as shut off at Naggs Head as usual.

Stay safe. Some warm days are coming to OBX again and I hope all can have food rides
