Mutants for stupid conditions!

I've done some epic sessions in hell washing machine surf lately and I've come to the conclusion that its the mutant that makes it that much more fun.

What typically happens Is it gets to a certain wave size and the TT riders evaporate. The sb riders handle the big waves better. Then combine big swell with washing machine hectic style surf and the wave riders also evaporate. Leaving one weirdo on a mutant loving the hell out of the silly conditions

If you ride a tt you have the advantage of ripping backwards and forwards. Its easy to boost and easy to do real fast direction changes. you and rise the shallows and the board can take more knocks that than an sb. So you can jump or chicken jybe out of the way of monster white wash. But you can't take steep wave faces easily without the chance of nose diving the board and getting rinsed. TT's generally become difficult in 1.5 head height + surf.

The surfboard rider can take on the steep wave faces and bigger waves but if fast direction changes are needed he either rides toeside or has to jybe. Jybing and or riding toeside in mental conditions is slower and less reliable that and an instant direction change the TT can do. Plus the directional rider with his long fins can't ride the shallows. That limits where he can ride. Sometimes ripping up the shallows in a few cm of water is water is required. Plus its wicked fun. The directional rider with his foamcore sb style construction needs to avoid rocky area's and anywhere the fin or board might impact something. That further limits the area's available to the directional rider.

So enter a well made mutant with TT style construction. One that can ride forward and backward without any disadvantage. One that can ride any wave a surfboard can. With that board you rip the shallows, weave among the rocks, boost off waves, clean monster white wash sections, ride those crazy jack up waves that pop out of nowhere. The stupider the conditions the more of a blast you have.


I think a lot more people who either rider TT or sb would benefit from a well build mutant.

I've been thinking that for I don't know for how long. Couple of years ago I spotted this board and I keep promising myself that one of these days I am going to get it.

Nice one. So in "normal" direction, you seem to have a moderate surf board rocker with deep concave. Should be ideal for chop. looks a bit back foot heavy in "normal" direction I guess, compared to a SB? In "mutant" direction, you have a pretty pronounced rocker under your feet which should yield perfect control, but you need some wind to make it work. I guess it's pretty balanced stance in "mutant" direction. Thin rail and very little volume make for knife sharp control and pretty good upwind in "normal" direction, rounded outline makes for good carving. Am I getting there?

I have to buy mine but the yankee $ is so high it would cost me $1500 CAD that's like 3 boards on sale. I just bought brand new Sector V5 for CAD $750. But one of these days....

I've read your posts for years ; in my opinion , you are , "MORE' than smart enough
to gather the necessary data to make a board for yourself , even if you have NO
mechanical skills.

Go to board-builders forum, and ask ; start by bending exterior plywood and
covering it with light glass, (cost under $50 to $80 each) since you get to reuse the
foot-straps and fins for each new build. My first board , (the one i learned on)
i cut the outline out of plywood, and tossed it in a hot-tub , then placed the hot
wet exterior ply on bricks to get the rocker, (took 3 tries to get it right), then
when it was completely dry, i covered it in 6oz fiberglass). Every time a new
crack would start to appear ; i fixed it with More glass,
(damn thing weighed a Ton) , but it Was cheap !!
