I ride in the south east asian sun and its absolutely brutal even when overcast especially if you are a pale skinned caucasian. In terms of sun cream if you have really fair skin and suffer in the sun this stuff is the absolute daddy. Except no substitute.

Regarding sun hats I started out using baseball caps but kept losing them after big wipeouts and getting a sunburnt scalp. I then switched to using the floppy bucket hats with the chin straps. I have a massive noggin and of all the brands I find that the Billabong surf hats fit my enormous mutant Mekon like head the best. If you are a little smaller in the cranial region try the ION hats.

Rashie wise I have tried a few brands but keep coming back to Quiksilver because they seem to last the longest without falling apart and the gorget is a bit lower cut and less constricting than most of the other brands.

Shorts wise if boardies aren't cutting it and you don't fancy lycra 'yoga pants' try the three quarter length Haglof shorts. I have a couple of pairs, they are super comfy, don't weigh a ton when wet or stick to your legs in an annoying fashion when wet.

Vertra sunscreen 50 on the face, best I've found so far. Long sleeve rash guard. And SolRx on the legs. Also stay out of the sun from 10 till 2, no amount of solar goo will save us albinos in the midday Hawaii sun. Hit it hard from 8 till 10, chill, eat, recover from 10 till 2, then go out for the afternoon sesh.

This looks like a decent way to protect your head without the goofy (but effective) bucket hats.

or even this one

The hoodies aren't great, I have one, but I find the brim too small to be effective sun protection and large enough to be annoying. I have used it surfing, but basically I put it on when I'm sitting around waiting for a wave and shove it back when it's time to paddle for the wave.

I bought some Dakine paddle pants, basically tights and they worked great today. Now to find a higher necked rash guard, the hooded ones are just too tight.

Thanks
For a "loose" top, check out this Xcel hoody.

I like that it has draw-strings for the hood to cinch it down when windy and just a tiny flat-zippered pocket at the hip. A lot of the other brands have big pockets and front access zips, so this one is quite minimalist which is ideal when wearing a harness. And it's not tight around the neck.

Good choice! Those are the exact pants I was going to recommend. Some diving specific brands offer some as well.

For feet, check out one of these:
http://www.injinji.com/trail-midweight-mini-crew.html
https://us.vibram.com/shop/fivefingers/ ... s/M02.html
I've used both of these and they've save me from some painful sessions. I've had the worst sunburn on the tops of my feet and toes because the sunblock would get rubbed off by my foot straps. The Injinji socks are basically rash guards for your feet. Make sure to get the Coolmax for quick drying.
If the ground is rough, I use the Vibram Signa shoes since they're so close to the Injinji socks in the fit.

For the head, check out the Shelta Osprey sun hat:
http://www.sheltahats.com/collections/osprey
Shelta has a unique rigid brim section up front (like a ball cap) which performs really well in the wind, but still has coverage for the ears and neck. Very cool design imo!
