Why doesn't everybody side rig their lines in launch position?

Postby plummet » Sat Feb 04, 2017 10:40 am

So lets just assume for a minute you have the room.

I see lots of guys rigging their lines upwind and some rigging their lines downwind.
They then walk the bar around to launch position and then launch.

I see very few side rig as they intend to launch. For me its a no brainer. Rig the lines in the direction you intend to launch.
Then hook in, walk back and boom. Job done.

With an upwind or down wind rig you then need to walk the bar 90 degrees to the launch spot. that means your taking up a 25m by a full 90 deg sweep of room. If everyone side rigged you would could launch 10 kites in the space of 3 upwind/downwind rigged kites.....

Rant over.

I rig my lines upwind.

Doing it sideways leads to lines fly away and make more mess, much cleaner my way

I rig upwind, then carry my kite over the lines into the correct launch position.
Tried rigging sideways but for me takes more concentration.

When the wind is blowing strong, it's easier to rig your kite with the lines upwind. This way your lines don't twist around each other and cause accidental death loop when launching. You should look into that, but I understand, nobody is perfect when they start learning.

I always rig them to the side. That way, like you said Plummet, the kite is in ready to launch position. I have had some difficulty at times running out the lines when the wind is really strong. But usually not.

Yes i side rig a lot.
It is a technique that comes from ram airs because the kites get set-up on their backs in line with the wind flow.
With tube you can do the same.
One way that works it to pump kite just barely enough to inflate LE & struts so kite stays flat...put some sand or weight on upwind tip...then run run lines cross wind
Then finish pumping fully & flip it LE down

But it is good to know how to rig your lines the 3 different ways....many times it will depend on the space you have to rig...people on the beach...obstacles...etc

Yes we don't see many people side rig

For the sake of discussion, doesn't side-rigging create a larger issue for others moving up and down the beach? Assuming we're usually launching in side-shore or side-on wind, and assuming most launch areas are longer along the shoreline than they are deep, then rigging to the side means everyone moving up and down the shoreline will need to step over (or on) your lines, yes? If you rig parallel to the shoreline (upwind or downwind), then that's less of an issue.

I rig downwind, if I can. It's easier to visualize tangles and crossed lines.

Why even take your lines off? I leave mine attached. This started doing this because of snowkiting. But it helps to have a bar for every kite.

At spots like Boracay you have to rig sideways...no space otherwise

IMO it's a bit like sex.

we all know how to do it, however most of the time, your favorite position will be determined by your location...

for example;

back of the car
in the shower
or the bedroom...
