End of July / beginning of August reco?

Postby marysia » Thu Jun 22, 2017 7:14 pm

Hi everyone,

I am looking for destination recommendations for end of July and the beginning of August. I am taking two weeks off, and I wanted to explore new spots. Ideally I would like to stay at a hotel right on or near the spot, so I don't have to drive. Ideally it would be a place easy to get to from the US with major airlines.

Caribbean is a good option (short flight from the US!), but I want to see new spots there - any recos? I've been to Cabarete, Barbados, Tulum, Bonaire and Aruba, and I liked Cabarete and Aruba the most. Cabarete was great because the hotel was right on the spot. Aruba has dry climate which is fantastic (no mosquitos).

Also, I would like to explore Europe and islands off the coast of West Africa - any recos here?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Marysia,
What sort of kiting are you after? What's your level?

Hey or6, I'd like to practice some tricks, but I don't mind choppy to medium waves water. I am intermediate level, I can do some basic tricks like backrolls and transition. But no loops or unhooked yet.

I am looking for nice strong winds :) and convenience - hotel near the spot, bars and restaurants.

I am going to Ceara in November so I was hoping to explore other destinations in August.

Thank you!

Other than Brazil? I will be there in the fall. Definitely great destination, but really long travel from NYC (no direct flights to Fortaleza!)

Maybe some of the Greek islands like Naxos? Should be some good thermals there if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Marysia, it sounds like Tenerife, el Médano, would be perfect for you. Google it. I have been there six or seven times, it's a fun little town, bars and restaurants on the beach, spot is perfect for intermediate kiting. In July and august, it's one of the most windy spots in the world. Of course, statistics are only statistics....

I usually rent a house on Airbnb. There are hotels, but I have never used them, so I don't know anything about them.

Just Google el Médano...plenty of info out there!

Hey or6, el Medano looks great! It's a strong contender, especially that I will be in Europe then. Do you usually need to rent a car there, or do you walk to the spot? Seems like a bit of a walk from town? Which beach do you go to, Playa Sur or Playa de la Tejita?

It's a 10 minutes drive from the airport to el Médano. Take a shuttle. In Médano, everything can easily be done on foot. You only need a car to go sightseeing around the island.

The beach is in El Médano, playa sur is where you launch. Playa la tejita Is only with the (in summer) very rare westerlies.

From playa sur you kite upwind to el muelle ( Pier), decente beginner wavespot, which can actually get pretty gnarly sometimes. Even further upwind is el cabezo, where professional windsurfers train.

Best places to stay...from the plaza central at playa chica until playa sur. From the central plaza it's like 5 min. Maybe 10 on the way back after a hard day kiting 😉

You do not need a car if you stay in El Medano. Playa Sur is the spot. You can rent rooms or apartments on the beachfront or still in walking distance.
As I wrote in another thread, El Medano looks a bit shabby but has its charms with a relaxed vibe, lots of local inhabitants and less tourists, surfers, hippies and nice, casual restaurants and bars.
Tenerife has some great landscape on the North side and up the Teide mountain, so it is worthwhile to rent car. Car rental is very cheap, I think the cheapest in the whole of Europe. Santa Cruz town center is also quite nice. Like with all of the Canary Islands there are quite a lot of places ruined by mass tourism but you can avoid that.
