When talking to other kiters I use whatever the majority of kiters use where I happen to be kiting. In my head I prefer MPH just because that's what I'm used to. It's hard to use water texture where I normally kite because the wind is side off. We use the lack of, or amount of blowing sand to determine kite size.

Knots. It's universal. Kite sizes make no sense as everyone will use a different one depending on board/person/preference. Water/bft doesn't make sense because it's open to vast interpretation variability and it's very hard to ID in changeable conditions.

Agree, eventhough we dont use it ourselves here in Denmark, it is THE unit to use for sharing in here, but many (1 out of 5 it seems now) use their local unit instead, like mph, which is really difficult to understand and relate to

I use my ears. If I can hear wind noise then I go foiling with a 10m. If I hear lots of wind noise I foil with the 7. If the wind noise is so loud I can't hear anything else I might foil with the 5m or grab the surfboard.

Most kiters at the beach will say 7m, 12m 18m Kite size......unless you got one of those wind meter things, or looking at the forcast.
