Yes - this is definitely true. But to me it seems like this is the case in nearly every disciplines, whether its sports, or art, or whatever. So in music for example, you learn fundamental scales, chords, and such. Then, after many years of practice you develop your own way of putting those together to create a style that is your own. The creativity and self-expression comes from the variations of those core items. I realize that is kind of an abstract comparison but as someone who plays music it was low hanging fruit.
