We need the whole kite communities help!

Postby Kitemanmuc » Mon Feb 26, 2018 6:08 am

We are making our final stand in Miami Beach, trying to prevent the city from banning kitesurfing on its beaches. We need your help and voice to show our city officials how important this is to us. We have been working around the clock for the last 4 months on this subject and are close to reaching an agreement. We need your help to push it over the finish line! Please sign our change.org petition.

I clicked link to sign but STOPPED after reading the petition:

"...all kiteboarders should be required to present IKO 3 certification..."

Seriously? If I wanted to take a trip to Miami and kite there, I have to go get IKO 3 certified first?

I understand the intention to make sure all kiters have adequate skills to kite safely on public beaches but this does not make sense in so many ways.

The problem is that’s the only way to have something to show...how can you trust someone telling I can Kite and then f**** it all up...those people are out there.

Better to show a level 3 than not being able to Kite at all.

If you can Kite it is easy to get a level 3 card. Costs a bit, do it once, problem solved.

PS: not a fan of regulations too, but better than having no access.

This path of requiring certification to do something in public is in general a bad idea. But EVEN if one agrees with it, why make it EXCLUSIVE to one FOR PROFIT organization? I vigorously disagree. I am strongly against the proposed ban in Miami but urge everyone to consider this IKO exclusivity before signing.

if there is an alternative to IKO, or an additional certification, it's more than welcome.

Just anything that can show that you know what you do...would be good to have.

I agree. But what if there is no choice: show a certificate or kite 50 km further away. What would you choose?

That's what you say but that is not what the petition says. Therefore, don't sign it as written.

IF you have to have certification, accept alternatives: local schools, PASA, community based kiting organizations, etc, etc.
