Air show in Fort Lauderdale. Is it safe to kite?

Postby Topaz » Fri May 04, 2018 12:15 pm

For the next three days it will run an air show in Fort Lauderdale beach, with different kind of planes including combat jets.

How low do these things fly?
Is it safe to kite?

It would be sad to end up hooked to one of these things flying at 600 knots. No time to release I guess.

I am sure they will call you off the water prior to the show or meanwhile if you were in danger.
Maybe they have a number to call? Or ask the life guards on the beach if there any around...they could ask for you.

Not sure about the states but over here they put out "Notice to Mariners" if anything's going to be going on that affects the sea, I would have thought planes flying low enough to be a danger to kites would also be a danger to ships with masts.

A few years ago, I was kiting around Cape Canaveral when a 747 carrying a space shuttle piggyback came soaring overhead VERY low for landing. The space shuttle had landed on the West Coast and the 747 was returning it to Kennedy Space Center. It was pretty cool to see.

The officials may tell you to get off the water during the air show because this is 2018 and the world is filled with crazy stuff (terrorist kiters and such), but the jets won't fly so low and you won't boost so high to pose any real danger. But (of course) please do what the officials ask you to do to preserve our launch sites. :thumb:

If the show is over the water they will probably ask you to leave the area.
You probably won't be in too much danger unless your kite gets over 200 feet.
As an investment in public relations you might want to stay clear.
A red arrow military jet aircraft once hit a yacht mast at the 105 foot level; wasn't the pilots fault because he was cleared down to 100 feet off the water and the boat was in the show area. It made a mess.

Go some place else, Dania, north to Pompano, Delray, etc.. They will likely stop you from going off Bahia Mar if you could even find enough room with the crowds to rig and launch. Guys pulling high speed aerobatics don't need the distraction of a moving kite when seconds count.

I got my morning downwind right in time from Commercial to Tiki Beach. The wind wasn't as great as yesterday though, or as forecast.

At noon, as the planes started to practice, there were cops on every beach telling people to get out of the water.

Negative Ghost-Rider. The biggest risk isn't down wash from the jets. Its straining relationships between the kite community, the city and FAA.

Also don’t underplay the risk of getting your ass kicked on the beach by “people”
...or other creatures
