Complete Tear ACL

Postby kkhouly » Wed Jun 20, 2018 1:05 pm

2 weeks ago i completely tore my ACL, after 1 week of resting and taking anti inflamatery pills the swelling in my knee went down and i retrieved full range of motion in the knee i am not at pain and tried kiting with a twin tip while wearing a simple knee brace just for reasurance. i did a couple of jumps and tricks nothing with extreme landings i did not experience pain or swelling. My knee so far has never buckled out of place im considered an athlete im 20 years old and work out almost every day however not that often on my legs. I NEED YOUR HELP SHOULD I DO THE ACL SURGERY OR NOT?????? are there any kiters out there that are kiting without an ACL and play freestyle or loop ???

Thanks all in Advance

Here's my experience , I was a pro waterskier , I ruptured my ACL when I was 25 yo , decided not to proceed with surgery as my knee was stable , I had no pain and wasn't limited in any movement ... I was completely fine during the 8 following years , then ended up fracturing the head of my tibia plate , I then took the opportunity to have surgery , went on with my career and stopped at 40 yo !

All you need to know is that not having surgery will in turn increase the strain on your cartilages and cause more issues down the line ... but surgery is not necessary if you are not handicaped for the sport you want to do ...

BTW I never used a knee brace before or after the surgery ...

Pro freestyle riders have undergone surgery (Youri Zoon, Kevin Langeree, I think one of the RIchman brothers) after tearing ACLs. If freestyle is your passion as you state in your description, I think I would get both ACL surgery AND a good brace.

I ruptured my ACL over 12 years ago when playing squash. I was fit back then and chose not to do surgery. My knee doesn't buckle under kiteboarding stress and I have no cartilage damage in that knee. However, my twintip sessions are not exactly high-end freestyle  and I mix it up with strapless wave riding.

When your ACL broke, that took the strain instead of something else. Next time you have the same wreck or landing, the "something else" is going to break or get fatiqued.

So, no, you don't need the surgery. You can ride, jump, run, bike, etc. for many years and be happy. However, if you are committed to landing big loops and you know there will be some hard landings, get the surgery. You don't have to rush, but plan on it.

I don't currently have a right ACL. That was verified recently by an MRI, but I believe I tore it 20 years ago. It didn't become an issue until recently, but I did always feel it when riding fakey, on bad landings and occasionally when snowboarding rough conditions. I suspect muscle tone in other areas dropped and now I don't have the stability for certain riding styles, so I ride more strapless under the kite, and on snowboard don't really jump because the landings tweak it. Powder is not a problem. :)

Now, you are not getting it for the same reason I have been making excuses... you ride a board year 'round and don't want to be off it for the 3-6 months it will take to recover. The good news is, you're 20 and will heal fast and likely won't even notice the surgery in a few years. But if you are really throwing down, you'll likely break it again. So plan on two surgeries and after the second you'll become a world class foil border instead. ;)

Karim, why haven't you worked on your legs? If you are an athlete who likes to ride hard, you need leg strength. Work on your legs, my friend.

I can't give you advice on ACL surgery, but I will say that doctors in my country (USA) perform far too much surgery. There are often less invasive alternatives that are better solutions. Generally, if you ask a surgeon if surgery is recommended, the answer will be "yes". Seek input from non-surgeon experts and consider surgery as a last resort. It may be different in Egypt, but that is my experience in the USA.

Good luck!!

hello,

IMO you need to have surgery.

I broke my ACL two years ago, in a ski accident, I was 46 at the time.
As a pro acrobat, I would have benefited from a speedy recovery (in aprox. 10 days), if opted for no surgery.
I'm now very happy that I had the operation.

However, it was explained to me, very clearly by different doctors and PT. that the problem is only going to come back in a 5-10 years time, when
the long term damage will give me inflammation, swelling and pain.
(this will happen even if its not "coming out of place")
Especially for someone who is active in dynamic sports, like kite boarding.

I fully understand your dilemma, since you feel no pain now, its tempting to postpone the problem...

The recovery (PT.) after surgery is hard work. (3-6 months or more)
Expect full force from your knee in 9-12 months.
At your young age, you have a better chance to recover 100% now than later, because one of the problem, with this kind of operation is the loss of muscles in the leg.
(harder to gain muscles back at an older age)
Since you did not have it done immediately after the accident (within 2-3 days) the doctor's will advise you to wait aprox 2 months or more.
Try to have as much muscle mass built up on your leg in the time leading up to the operation.
Take your PT. very seriously and it can be as good as new!

Strong leg muscles protect the knee joints, so whatever you choose, don't miss the leg day in the gym...

hope it helps,
cheers
(ps: feel free to write me pm. if you have questions...)

If you go ahead with surgery, which imo is what you really need to do, I recommend that you be 100% certain that the surgeon is an expert specialist in the procedure. If possible one that pro athletes trust. They are not all equal, many barely competent.

Complete Tear ACL

Postby SalmonSlayer » Wed Jun 20, 2018 6:59 pm

I had it done after a player tackled me from behind playing soccer. My legs were very strong, but I did not want the extra stress put on other parts of my knee. I believe getting it fixed was the right decision. I have averaged 3+ soccer games a week for the last 18 years since the surgery. Probably closer to 3k games. My knee is as good as new. I dont think I could have played that many games without side effects had I skipped the surgery.
