If you have a leash, and the kite takes you on a trajectory off the water, through the air and land back on the water - while you are travelling on that trajectory with the leash taut, the leash will act as an aiming device, to make the board follow a similar trajectory to your body. When you stop, the board will follow the trajectory it was on.
If the leash loaded up before the board released from the water, there will be elasticity in the kite lines, your body and the leash, which will produce an overall catapult effect.

I have an unusual - and perhaps freak - reel leash anecdote to share (albeit no idea of the brand - not that it mattered in this instance).
I was out in ~25kts with 4ft swells attempting to learn water starts. Due to repeated failures, my instructor equipped me with a board leash to optimize my time on the water.
Crashed. Safety line wrapped around my footpad. The kite started looping. Due to the leashed board holding tension in the line, the safety system didn't activate. Couldn't dump the kite because it was still attached to me via the leash.
I ended up having to wrestle my way out of a seat harness to dump the kite.

Just bought one of these things, first use today with my foil board, brilliant. Clipped onto a ring on the front strap while relaunching, board stayed with me, not drifting off. Once the kite was up, un clipped and off riding again. Too easy.

(could you not activate CL. Safe Release and Safety Lease release when that failed!?)
edit: a harness with releasable attachment could have helped... (like Prolimit)

ocANUS attack leash, I heard a girl ripped her face in half using one in NZ.. at point shite. from forehead to chin a few years back.

Anything can happen kiting. If you don't want to use the Oceanus Reel , then simply do not use it. I like the GD thing and if my face gets rip off I will certainly be an advocate for revisiting its use.... HAppy Kiting!

Good imagination. So the Oceanus maker must be bankrupt now because of all the injuries related lawsuits, right? Really.
