I know this is probably the most asked question around here, but I just ask for opinions.
I am just about to buy a new 9m kite as a complement to my 12m 2015 Naish Pivot, but I hesitate just before hitting the buy-button. I like the Pivot so I am getting another one. I have always been riding 12+9 sqm as my main two kites and I very rarely need to bring anything smaller even if I do get a bit overpowered at rare occations with my 2008 9m Cult. I probably kite 70% with the 12 and 25% with the 9. The other 5% with any of my oldies (15m RRD Hypertype and 6m Naish Boxer SLE). Even if I can get around with the 9 in pretty much anything windy around here, I do feel that a 7 would add comfort on the really windy days. I currently have a Naish Cult 9m that is getting really worn after many seasons and need replacement. My original plan was to get a new Pivot 9m and search for a older, used 7m. That would give me a classic 12-9-7 quiver. But now I hesitate on getting a 8m to get a really neat and handy Pivot 12+8 quiver instead, while saving some money too. Anyone get any input on the step 12-9-7 vs 12-8 in the Naish Pivot lineup?

As my profile shows, I like the 12-9-7 spread, but I have not tried the 12-8 quiver. But then I also have older kites in all those sizes and more (20+ kites!). I have the original 2015 9m Pivot and love it, but in Cape Town you really need a 7m, and my 2016 7m Pivot is fantastic. And from everything I hear the 2017/2018 models were even better. And surely the 2019 is good to. If you like your 12m Pivot I'm confident you will love the smaller sizes, as those are the best sizes of the Pivot.

I probably kite 70% with the 12 and 25% with the 9
So you should stay with 12-9m and find a cheap 7m for the very few days you get slaughtered on the 9m. Loads of barely used 7's around if you want to change. I wouldn't.

Hi, I weigh 75 kilos, and have 2018, Pivots in 12m and 9m, plus 2017 Slash 7m, I very rarely use the 7m Slash.
The wind range at my weigh on the 12m is 11/12 knots up to 22 knots, depower pulled in and ok. I could change down to the 9m at 16/17 knots and ride that up to.... not sure but pretty damn windy. so the 7m Slash doesn't see much action.
I think you could get away with 12m and 8m, especially if you are heavier than 75K. probably changing over kites at 19/20 knots ?

As Iriejohn says, 12, 9, 7, is better, get a second hand 7m , also I hear the Slash is a very good alternative to the Pivot.

Ex Pivot owner. I had the 9 and 12m at 90 kgs and my friend went 8 and 11m at 80kgs.
I think a 3m gap is good, 4m means you're increasing your time spent under or overpowered.
Food for thought. I ditched the pivot in the end cause the frame was too weak and id bend the leading edge of the 9m all the time when doing really powered kite loops. If you're on the heavier side and buying a 7m for kiteloop jumping and not wave riding, maybe consider a different high wind kite.
I should point out lastly, that this was the 2016 model and I dont know if the newer models are still the same

12/8 will work okay , but that will mean you will have to stay on your 12 into higher winds or switch to the 8 and risk being under powered.....7, 9.5, 12, 17, is my quiver

Given what Kevin Langaree is capable of doing with Pivots, including the 9m, it seems the 2017/2018 and surely the 2019 models, are more resistant to bending the leading edge. And he must be around 90kb. I'm 85kb, but have never done a powerloop, so my 2015 9m and 2016 7m have been perfect for me.
My favorite youtube video of all time -

That is an awesome video. So much stoke there.
OP I would also take the 9. If you do not want to get a 7 immediately wait and see. The 9 has great range and you already have a 6 right. That sometimes the 7 is the right kite and you will then miss it, but it depends on how often this occurs.
