Doors instead of foil for summer days?

Postby finalcell » Sun Aug 26, 2018 3:12 pm

Hey all,
i have started to look for something that will get me going around 8 knots having 90kg/200lbs (this summer is horrible...). Was looking around, reading forum and almost everything points me to foils for sub 10 knots riding. Only wallet protests :-? .
Does boards like SU-2 Big Foot Yeti, FlyDoor fro FS or Shinn Bernhard make at least some sense for <10 range? Or this is retro thing now, and foils rules marginal condition scene now?

Doors are cool. Especially if the water is shallow. Alia is also a nice option. You need a much bigger kite for the door.

One word = Booooooring.
Directionals are much more fun in LW. Less board behind back foot. But there is not much realy LW specialized directionals nowadays. About LW ability only thing that work close /but not quite/ to foils are doors with big central fin. They can be ridden flat and on fin. Also on front foot instead of back. Actually with foils on market there are something like regress in development of big TTs. F.e. new doors - are joke. No central fin and heel side is shorter than toeside. Im very interested in logic about this design.

Go Foil and save yourself time - you anyway ends here.

Shallow spot is the only good argument for the doors.
In 8kts it's really hard to do anything fun with them.
you can't jump with any kite size.. so it's just moving the lawn at pretty slow pace

Now with good hydrofoil, in same 8kts you can ride pretty fast probably ~20mph, do stupid upwind angles and boost good airs

Wallet is no issue anymore to get into foiling , get up and running from €799 (board + foil)

Thanks GONG !

Hope somebody reviews the Gong Foil soon! But it looks like we will have to wait till next year for that. Anybody been on the prototype?

Deep water: go foiling.
Shallow: try a Skim.. so much more fun than a Door Type board.

I am a door user for a long time and I have to admit that I like it if other options are failing.

Just to be real: Yesterday the wind died and there were only two foilers out there plowing back and forth while I could do pussy loops , go strapless in the tiny bumps, play around.

Of course its not like with my 130 in 30knt wind - thats for sure. But its way easier to just switch boards on the beach than pumping another kite.

Just to give you another feedback. G

.. I use a door with only 2 fins. Everything else is too much fin in the water. There also is no difference between the old and the new doors - not really. SO just get an old one which are cheap. And big boards are way better than big kites. Yes I also have a 17 but thats only for winter times.

I'm using the Gong surffoil , but many of the kitefoils have already been sent to regular folks ... just hit the gong forum for reviews or any questions you might have and they'll answer all of your questions ...

they're not in prototype phases but shipping to customers since july for the foils and past 2 weeks for the boards ...

+1 for foiling. I'm only about 10 sessions in but am having a lot of fun. I invested way too much money on big kites and big boards back in the day. Often two or three sessions and then got so bored they sat in the garage rotting. This is the first light wind investment I don't regret.
