Not entirely sure what I did wrong but my ribs are pretty unhappy with me.
I went for my first backroll after watching youtubes (a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) I think when I went for it I went too high....and midway through I crashed the kite and body slammed into the sea on my side.
It was still to this day my best ever session though (up until that crash) beautiful wind, perfect waves and my own little audience on the beach
Like I told my wife while wincing through the pain, totally worth it

99.999% of people accidentally pull on their back hand when learning backrolls, resulting in half a kiteloop, big yank and massive crash. I'd guess that's what you've done too from the sound of it.
Next time let go of the bar with your back hand to avoid this happening again.

I had a feeling afterwards this is what I did.
It all felt good until all of a sudden I was hit by a truck

Yes, pulled backhand, and Kite started to loop...
Happens to many people.
My advice: try it only with a big Kite in light winds.
And you will land it quickly.
Fast turning kites are dangerous. Slow them down as much as you can (inner connection of the bar, slow setting on Kite).
The slower, the happier your ribs will be in the future.

The best backloop kiteloop I ever did was early on and by accident!

Also to avoid an accidental kiteloop, try to hold the bar as close as possible to the center, that way the it won't loop as fast and you might have a chance to correct.

Like I told my wife while wincing through the pain, totally worth it
Last time I broke ribs I spent 6 weeks sleeping in an armchair getting little sympathy from my wife who's a medical type person.
Cough: pain.
Laugh: pain.
Sneeze: pain (severe!)
Lie down: pain.
Stand up: pain.
Blow nose: pain.
...
Good luck.

Yeah I get that too. "What do you mean you are sick with the flu, that's not sick, I've seen a guy lose 2 limbs today." Zero sympathy, ever. Kiting based injury isn't an injury at all, as it's always my own fault it doesn't count somehow.
