TS Gordon and Pensacola Beach

Assuming one understands the risks of kiting in the edges of a tropical storm, would Pensacola Beach be the most suitable tomorrow and Wednesday? Biloxi looks less appealing.

What are the risks of kiting the edges of a tropical storm in your experience? Just curious.

Well I'm too late anyway now, but obviously severe gusts, heavy rain, possible lightning, but I have yet to try it and would like to one day. I hope someone does at Pensacola Beach tomorrow.

Before and during the storm it's not that much fun. You have to be so alert to the gusts and you will get yanked around a bit, not to mention the lightning risk. The rain bands will bring the gusts and then kill the wind.

I prefer to ride after the storm when the rain and lightning are gone and the winds are more steady. Better to be safe and kite another day.

I like a post storm kite, the beach is all battered and covered in seaweed, the "Normals" are in their houses still bundled up by the TV and I'm out in the gloomy grey sea boosting off waves like a deranged fat seal high on coke.

It was really good this morning about 20 miles east, on Fort Walton Beach. We rode early, before the rain bands got there. Nothing crazy, just wind in the low-mid 20's. The waves were really nice for a change. But, you could see the clouds moving in and I quit once I started feeling the rain sprinkles. I had to come in and open the shop anyway, so it sort of worked out. Ironic when my kiteboarding job gets in the way of my kiteboarding. ;)

I have ridden in many tropical storms, it is generally good wind day before and after. Just be prepared to drop your kite on a dime and leave when the rain/lightning/wind arrives. If known lightning it's not worth it at all, don't want to become dead Ben Franklin flying kite in a lightning storm

I'd planned on possibly going out this morning early, if the weather was nice enough. It ended up raining like hell, so I didn't. Good thing...

I'm glad to hear someone got out and enjoyed it. I will still try to experience a TS or hurricane one day, if not for the kiting then for the sheer natural phenomenon. Let's see what Florence does.
