Great Lakes beaches?

Postby SpaceRacer » Fri Sep 07, 2018 1:54 am

I will be traveling through Milwaukee and Chicago on my way to the NJ area. Any awesome beaches along the way or worth detouring a bit for? Never been but the pictures look amazing and the map is daunting LOL. Such an expansive area I'm sure.

Thanks,

SR

Avoid Chicago itself (Montrose) and Wolf Lake for numerous reasons.

Good ones are:
Waukegan North of Chicago
Miller on the bottom
Michigan city on SE
St. Joseph and South Haven on the “Southerly” East

Check temps and winds here

Next three days will be awesome

There are tons if you hug Lake Erie, depending upon forecast North side or S side.

Bring a decent wetsuit. The Great Lakes are renowned for their lack of warmth....

The key missing factor is when are you going to be here. Depending on wind strength and direction, you could go anywhere from Sheboygan on the WI side down the entire lake and up the other side in Michigan. It all depends on the direction.

I live in Madison, Wi., but travel a lot to Lake Michigan for good winds.

What's your choice? Waves? Flat water? Foiling?

Look me up and I'd be glad to give advice.

Ha ha ha!

Yeah the 1 month window for riding Superior without walrus blubber on is about to close quickly!
I remember showing up to ride in Ontonagon in a NW in the end of September a couple years ago. I get all rigged and put my 5mm suit on. I get over the dune and there's about 5 local kids playing in the lake like it's bath water. I go down and put my hand in and it was probably close to 70 degrees........I roasted my ass off that session in the suit.

October/Novemburrr is a a different story.
