I was speaking of disaster frequency, not insurance claims or cost, chances of becoming a victim or infrastructure considerations. Simply whether the US has more natural disaster events than most other countries, which it does not by this information. The US is listed as having a "Low chance of disasters." If mother nature was truly trying to trash the US, as bizarre a concept as that might be, we would be listed as having a "Very high chance of disasters."

Look at some fatality stat's.

Ten deadliest natural disasters since 1900

Note: This list does not include industrial or technological accidents, epidemics, or the 1938 Yellow River flood.
Rank Death toll (estimate) Event* Location Date
1. 1,000,000–4,000,000 1931 China floods China July 1931
2. ≥500,000[2] 1970 Bhola cyclone East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) November 1970
3. 280,000 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami Indian Ocean December 26, 2004
4. 273,400 1920 Haiyuan earthquake China December 16, 1920
5. 242,000–655,000 1976 Tangshan earthquake China July 28, 1976
6. 229,000 Typhoon Nina—contributed to Banqiao Dam failure China August 7, 1975
7. 160,000[9] 2010 Haiti earthquake Haiti January 12, 2010
8. 145,000 1935 Yangtze river flood China 1935
9. 143,000 1923 Great Kantō earthquake Japan September 1, 1923
10. 138,866 1991 Bangladesh cyclone Bangladesh April 1991

We even don't make the list, fortunately for the US. It is a dangerous world and disasters seem to be on the increase.

Fortunately for the US we have spectacular access to information & communication. I think that's a huge difference maker in the human loss factor. I hope everyone in NC, SC, & S. VA are scampering out like they should be. The most devastating hurricane that's ever hit NC was Hazel, 1956. Only Cat4 ... yet. I've been trying to remember a storm that ever had such a straight fetch at the NC coast & couldn't remember anything so I started researching the most notorious hurricanes. None had this type of straight onshore fetch. None stalled out like this storm is projected to do once they made landfall. This thing looks biblical in its impact to NC....maybe not with human loss, but, in catastrophic damage its going to make history I'm afraid.

We were lucky. There was ocean over-wash and erosion to beaches and dunes, but no significant property damage. Hatteras Island was re-opened to residents yesterday and to tourists today. No property damage in my neighborhood on Hatteras Island.

Further south, it's different. Around Wilmington and New Bern (NC), there is significant damage and continuous flooding from storm-related rain causing the rivers to swell. The latest death toll I've seen is 17 (mostly occurring inland from falling trees, flooding, etc.). Despite the earlier predictions, the storm turned out to be a flood event moreso than a wind event. Similar to Hurricane Matthew 2 years ago.
