But why was choosed cranky number 112 ? Its very stupid combination of digits. In emergency situation must be something easy as 123 or 111. Best i think is 111. Event 122 is better to remember. Even why not 911 which knowsall world from movies. As always european beurocrats doing stupid decisions.

agreed.

I Germany we use 112 for fire rescue and ambulance since a long time
110 for police.

Not sure about other EU countries, if they adapted, or also used these numbers since a long time.

But makes absolutely sense to have the same number all over Europe.

European bureaucrats? What a stupid thing to say.

112 even works in the US. 112 is as standardised as it gets. Surprising no-one knew that on that beach.

As for the accident it just fills me with sadness. I have seen people getting thrown onto the beach, but obviously never seen anyone be so unlucky that they get dragged with a looping kite like that :(

You say 112 as standardised number but later say no one knew it on beach/or just cant easy remember. Exactly what i talking in emergency/in shock situation its to difficult number to remember this number. As youself that you number you call in affect beeing. 911 or 111 at least. Never you naturally dont think that 112 is something related with emergency. I dont konw who confirmed this stupid nimber and why. Did their did some asking of people or psichological tests whoch number is most keeps/recalls naturally in memory in such extra situation ?

I have called 112 in a stressed situation myself. So yes I did remember. To me 911 is not easier than 112. I didn’t think of calling 911 when I called 112.

Emergency numbers are not something you change lightly. It is fine that the younger generation that have grown up with American movies relate 911 to an emergency number, but that is not to say similar numbers are not as “obvious” for many living in Europe. You assume that everyone remembers 911. I bet there are quite a few that are 50+ who might not have a clue about what you are talking about.

My main point was that you assume some incompetence in the decision to go for 112 that you in no way can substantiate. 112 is hardly chosen by random. Personally I don’t care which number it is. Would be excellent if they standardized a number for the whole world. Funnily enough 112 might be the closest we got to a common standard so... doesn’t sound as cool as shouting 911 in movies I guess.

Lots of possibilities for looping besides line breaking.

The witness said Kiter did not release safety while being dragged. Do we know that for sure? Maybe he was trying and couldn’t get to it or it malfunctioned?

I know that for sure because I witnessed the whole scenery from up close. As mentioned, he pulled in thar Bar and did not attempt to eject the Quick Release. After that he lost consciousness with his arms hanging loose besides his body.
Regarding emergency call: I asked people to call 911 since I was busy I couldn’t take care of it myself. People told me there was no connection, either because no one answered the phone (which would be inexcusable) or it simply did not work due to poor reception.

It seems to me that it would be worthwhile to ensure (worldwide) that all common versions of emergency numbers get through - ie 911, 999, 122, 111 etc. In these days of digital exchanges this would seem to be a very simple thing to do and would mean that anyone would be able to access emergency services using whichever number they were accustomed to using.

It is not that simple I'm afraid.

Even if there is a number and a coverage(!), than we would talk about the location services or language barrier and what not.

It is not unrealistic that many, if not all foreign kiters (not locals), would not be able to even describe the location, or correct beach. Local beach name?

We have a lot of experience with this, huge continent to cover, remote or really long beaches. And every now and than fatalities happen. Even with EPIRB etc.
Best to not think about that and carry on.
