Is it true no kiting on Playa Del Carmen beaches?

Postby Osprey1 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 7:05 pm

Can one kite in the hotel zone at Playa Del Carmen? My friend told me the police were cracking down including at cocoa beach. What’s the word with kiting there?

I was there last year, and I used to windsurf there for years,
this was before it was changed to a sunbed beach.
you can still get out on a windsurfer but there is no room for a kite to set up, it always was a tiny launch area but now its mega tiny.
the only way I would dare go kitesurfing there is from a boat, which you can do as they advertise the fact around the promenade back from the beach, either that or get down there around 6am before anyone hits the beach.
best stick to Famara beach, 20 minutes drive.
or change islands like I have done to fuertaventura.

there isn't beach room to setup and a lot of swimmers in center of playa del carmen.

I kited a few times off the beach just north of the reef cocoa beach.

Overall kiting wasn't great there but i was there only 4 days.
I went to Holbox and it was great.
Tulum looked ok too.

Were you there recently to comment on the seaweed, where is it really bad enough to interfere and stink up the beach?

a few years ago I stayed at the iberostar grand paraiso (not playa, but close) and I could kite in front of the hotel.

I would stay away from busy areas, but our beach was not crowded.

Lat year I was booted from Playa Paraiso (Tulum).. Local security dude whistled and said that I was not allowed to kite there.. I got good 45 minutes of foiling though..
I had no problems launching at Barcelo Resort (riviera maya) as long as I stayed near the sail boat launch area. Local security guys were friendly and tried to help.
However the winds at the hotel were sketchy (cross offshore and gusty).. I asked the local jetski guys to keep an eye on me and pick me up if things looked wrong.
So in general, I'd say that most resorts would probably allow it as long as it does not affect the swimmers (like special boat area, etc)

I did let my sister fly a trainer kite which she dropped in water, the seaweed were an issue then lol.
Else didn't really notice bad smell, wasn't there recently but there was still a lot of seaweed when i went back in 2015.

Planning to go to Mexico from December till May. Wanted to go to Playa Del Carmen for that period. But wind statistic for the past years doesn't look promising. How are the things in reality now? How many days in month is kiteable (twintip, 9m or 12m kites)? Are there any kiters at all?
