Meet Pete Cabrinha & Commissioner Kiter Ken Russell

Pete Cabrinha stopped by Adventure Sports Miami to say hello to local kiters last Friday night.

Long term kiter, Ken Russell and Miami City Commissioner filled us in on kiting access and water quality issues. It is very rare to have a kiter in politics, it is far more rare to have one so responsive in office.

In addition to meeting Pete Cabrinha, hearing about the good and important work Commissioner Ken Russell is tackling, we also heard from "Rescue A Reef" based at UM's RSMAS facility. Adventure Sports Miami like many of us are quite concerned about our waters with the recent algal problems on top of other more long term issues. So, they arranged for Rescue A Reef to speak to us about what they are doing with community help. Our reefs are being heavily impacted by climate change and poor water quality. This is important work deserving our support.



Showing some of the steps employed by Rescue a Reef. Embedding eyebolts in Staghorn coral fragments to allow them to be hung in the nursery for growth and then tie-wrapped to spikes driven into reef substrate for eventual repopulation. The coral colony to the right has small cores cut for fragmentation for accelerated growth of numerous colonies from the resulting fragments.
