Safety went off after minor crash.

Postby kite_hh » Thu Nov 29, 2018 10:28 am

Recently, towards the end of my session, I noticed something tangling around my waist. At first I didn't think much of it, but I quickly realized something was not right and there shouldn't be anything hitting me while I hit the waves (it is a short leash).

So I stopped and investigated in the water. To my utter surprise my safety leash had become undone! :o

That was quite scary.

Nothing was broken or open. I proceeded to use the carabiner to attach the leash to the safety ring and went on riding. It was fine until the session ended.

I haven't experienced that before.

Did that happen to anyone yet?

I guess it is just one more thing I need to check every now and then on the water.

(I had a camera on me during that session so I can really narrow it down to a few seconds when the safety is still attached properly and when it is not anymore).

Some 12 years i dont use leash at all so temporary uncliped leash is no biggie :)
Anyway - reason must be specific to particular leash clip and connecting interface so without knowing which one it is nobody tell you.

More than likely you didn't properly attach the leash before going out.

It happens.
Maybe after a crash it got released.

But from nothing it won’t open...some force must have been applied at some point.

From your title, it sounded like your QR had deployed inadvertently!

A friend had a leash that would occasionally unclip itself after a tumble.
He changed it for a new leash (stronger spring clip) and no further issues.

Replacement for both ends of leash:

Works like a dream. Made a fix for my mystic leash with no cutting, splicing etc.

Nope. I have excellent HD footage of it being properly attached. 8)

If you are aware there is no safety leash it may (should) not be an issue. Finding out you don't have one when you thought you had one is what caught me off guard. :-D

Edit: Attached a picture of the carabiner.

So it happened to you as well? I agree, something (beyond water) must have hit it. Maybe I bent over awkwardly during the crash? I wonder what the odds are..

Yes, that would work. I will think about it. Thanks!

Sorry for the confusion. For me the safety is the safety leash and the quick release is the quick release. I am not aware of a less ambiguous term.
I will look into changing the carabiner, though I think it would involve some decomposition of the safety leash. Since it has happened only once and I noticed quickly I might just put it on my "check every now and then"-list. :-)

If you have a clip with a gate that has no lock to hold it closed and you hook to another rigid clip, it can come undone. All it takes is for it to be twisted or folded over on itself and pulled at a funny angle. I can't make a video demonstrating this at the moment, but play with it and you should see what I mean. It's not a big deal, just hook it back on. It's happened to me a few times but the chance of it happening at a time when it is needed is very low.

The other option is to either get a different kind of clip with a lock, or to hook to something soft, rather than a hard loop.

Peter
