I get this a lot, especially after lots of crashes. They bend, twist, stretch etc. I just take a hammer to it every once in a while to make sure the gate opens/closes nicely but even then it still happens now n again. Its not the loosing of a kite that bothers me as much as the thought of the b**stard bouncing up and fish hooking my eyeball out that I’m not such a fan of!

My primary concern is that my kite is going back to the beach, while I am still out in the water and may have quite a swim ahead. :o :)
Also my kite may (without safety) get the idea to get involved with other people on the way to the beach or do other stuff I don't approve of.. :nono: .

I just looked at the footage. It wasn't a particulary rough crash. Just me going underwater a little more than I usually intend to. :P
I guess it comes down to Murphy's law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong".

Replacement for both ends of leash:

Works like a dream. Made a fix for my mystic leash with no cutting, splicing etc.
Hey, wrogu. If you replace both ends of the leash with the clip shown, aren't you giving up your quick release mechanism? That's a safety concern, isn't it? :o

The only way you can release a small caribiner like this is to have SLACK in the line. Whereas a CL on a hook can be released at just enough tension to where you can pull it toward you.

Small caribiners are impossible to get control of with enough grip to move sideways, while at the same time taking tension off that section of line, without wrapping your hand around the line.

Nope. I replaced both original carabiners, safety mechanism ... is safety mechanism,it was untouched and remained the same. I will try to post a pic later.

P.S. I use this kind of leash:

Thanks for the video!

I guess it must have been some motion similar to this.

Hitting the water with some speed can certainly induce a lot of pressure on lines and leash.

I've had this happen several times, I find different leashes are worse than others. Usually you feel it bumping your leg pretty quick and re-attach.

Since switching to Cab short leashes I haven't had it happen though.

Or get a piece of tubing that just fits over the gate you can slide up to lock it and slide down (onto the gate) to unlock it.
