Flite sizing

Postby alford » Tue Dec 25, 2018 6:42 pm

For a 100kg rider on twintip, I'm seeking opinions on next size down be from 17m. Is the jump from 17 to 12 too big? I know this is very subjective but I'd like some thoughts from the Flite crew. Also, how would you describe bar pressure on 17m Flite. Thanks

17-12 is great. Very common proven combo across many brands.
The flite 12 performs very well in light conditions and the 17 depowers very effectively, creating plenty of overlap, even if using just one board.

Alford, I'm 90 kg and I love the 12m,17m Flite combo. You ought to be able to hold down the 12m til it's really honkin. 17m bar pressure is light. I thank Todd at OR for recently taking the time on the phone to walk me through the bridle lock mod.

What the lock mod does for the kite’s performance, please?

Lock mod sounds intriguing. Where did you see anything about it?

I know that for the razor there is a lockable bridle that changes the handling to give it more pull through the loops and make it more freestyle oriented. Haven't heard of a similar thing for the Flite though

You can expect to "feel" your Flite more in flight. Input is more direct with the kite responding instantly. I don't perceive more power through the loop, but maybe that is just me.

I heard of the mod, and was encouraged to try it, directly from Ocean Rodeo (Todd). I am glad to pass that recommendation on. Once I locked the first and flew it, I locked all my Flites.

Is it just a single pulley for the mod like with the Razor? Or multiple pulleys? I'm tempted to give it a go myself.

So 12 vs 17m 100kg. I can get going in 14 knots with the 12m and a bigger board and by working the kite. What can I expect from the 17m?

there are three pulleys on the Flite. Only the two inner pulleys get locked. The pulley nearest the wing tip must NOT be locked.

I have had the bridals locked on my Flites for 2 years now. As Randy said you do not lock the outer wingtip pulley, only the center and middle pulleys.
Locking does give a faster more direct feel. I feel that I jump better when using the locked bridals. I haven't noticed a difference when looping, but Flites loop fairly soft anyway.
I think you may lose a little depower and the relaunch does seem be a bit slower to me. I see some wear on the bridal lines from the pulleys as they no longer move. I don't see this as a problem on the newer Flites as they have eliminated these pulleys, keeping only the outer one.
8 and 10 m Flites are already quite fast so you may want to try it out.
Currently I run my 10m unlocked and on the slower wingtip setting as I do more foiling now. My 12 m I keep locked. It makes the speed differential less so when I move from the 12 to 10 m I don't notice it as much.
My 14.5 m is also locked and in fact have changed out some of the bridal sections to eliminate the center and middle pulley like on the newer Flites.
To lock the bridal you need a short piece of bridal or flying line. Run it through the pulley and knot the end. Separate the the bridal at the loop/knot connection point and add the new "locking" line. You will have to run the loop over 2 knots now. It easy enough to lock/unlock the lines if you leave the locking line in the pulley
