St. Thomas / USVI Spots?

Postby skullcandy » Fri Dec 28, 2018 2:25 pm

Hi All! I’ll check the location maps for spots in St. Thomas to kite, but anyone have any local knowledge? I’m advanced wave rider looking to Kite in St. Thomas next week for a couple days. If no waves, I can bomb around on a TT.

Thanks!
Greg

I lived on St Thomas back in the early 1990's. There is inconsistent but really good surf there mid winter if you know where to look. Unfortunately, the winds are better on the East side of the island. When the waves were down i would go windsurfing and i found the winds best around Red Hook. Plan to take or rent light wind gear. Good luck.

Lived there 3 years 2005-2008, the best surf spots are one the north side of the island. The best/ mostly only kite spots are on the east tip of the island/ Red Hook. Ritz Carlton bay the most popular. If you have a boat, your options open up a lot. But most of the decent waves in winter have offshore winds surrounded by mountains on the opposite end of the island. Everybody kites at the ritz beach and the wind this time of the year can be surprisingly good!

I remember Sapphire beach is another spot, at Saint John bay.

Going there in March

Wondering if it is deep enough in Sapphire bay and Smith bay and in front of the Ritz for an hydrofoil. I know there is a lot of corals and want to make sure it is possible. From the satellite views it seems fine in the center part of those bays but hard to tell really...

Boat launch ain't an option.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Or other spots...

Thanks

Sapphire gets deep pretty quick, actually most spots/beaches do. Did lot's of shore scuba diving there. It's not like the Bahamas/ Turks, Belize, or other atoll reef Islands. These are mountains that come out of the water, just started kiting when I lived there but had a boat in red hook and fished/dived a lot. I could be 10 ft off a rock and have 80 ft. of water below me. Go on youtube, clear water can be deceiving on depths, believe me, I live in the Bahamas, 5ft of water looks like 1 ft!.
