One wonders if osteopenia could be involved. I’ve known some athletic women who had it, and you wouldnt expect it from their apparent health and activities...
On the other hand, “junky” overhead waves could be blown out mush or gnarly closeouts that can crush you.
Hope the injured rider heals well! Femur can be tough.

Several local wave riders use foot hooks effectively. For high wind or big chop days, or sometimes just for boosting airs. Mostly the foam nsi klingon type not the longer predator style ones. They give enough grab to keep the board on your feet but without risks straps can bring in wipeouts ... a middle ground option. (Btw these were being used on surf kiteboards at least as far back as 2010, before foiling became popular)
