Surfboard repair in Kenya

Postby RQO » Sat Feb 02, 2019 10:14 am

Hi, I dented my Evo surfboard on a Kenyan reef the other day (see pic below). There are apparently no professional surfboard repairs in country and the local kitesurfing schools do not have the ability to fix it. I am keen to get back on the water quickly. Any suggestions as to how to get it repaired?

Most kite shops carry Solarez ( https://www.solarez.com/ ) or some other UV cure epoxy.

Or they may carry epoxy putty sticks for ding repairs. You might be able to find a variety of these putty sticks at a hardware store as well.

Thanks. We did contact them but unfortunately they do not feel confident to do the repair. So I will probably have to do it myself even if it will be a first for me.

It doesn't look that bad ....make a temporal repair to enjoy your holidays ....loctite the cracks and sand it , if you can find the glue and/or put a sticker that covers the whole fin box and cracked area ,later using a cutter or a knife make the hole for the fin tabs and screws .....look at your kite bag ,if you have repair kit inside ,the Tear aid sticker for bladders repair works wonders for that, superstrong sticker and it will make it waterproof ....take the board to a repairshop when you comeback... :thumb:

You need two things to do a good temporary repair: epoxy putty (or any putty that wont dissolve the eps
core of the board —as long as its not polyester resin or stinking of solvent its probably ok), and a decent clean application of it.
Get the board dry and clean.
If possible find a drill and drill a few very small holes, 1-3mm diameter , one very 8-10 mm into the board about 20-30mm deep straight into the board through the crack. You can use a tiny nail or a big needle to make the holes, with or without drill.
The goal is to make clean holes enough to allow you to squeeze enough glue into the weak area to support the cracked skin. Once you have these holes made, force epoxy or other glue in through the holes, one at a time, until full.
If you use other than epoxy glue, be cautious if it is a type that expands. In that case fill holes in stages, not all at once.
This technique is the best you can do if you dont have more supplies than glue and a pointy thing.
Obviously if you can just seal the hole with a sticker and run the board without a fin in that slot, that will also work!!
