Sometimes I wish I knew my speed

There are many smart watches to pick from but I don't wear a watch and I don't need to measure my speed all the time.
Having an waterproof iPhone maybe there's a decent GPS app which I can use for occasional curiosity attacks.
Or maybe i should think of iWatch to also use it as OneWheel "dashboard"
So my questions are:
- which iOS app to use for occasional measurements and/or track recording?
- is iWatch a good device to use to check your speed and record track?

if you have gopro 5 or newer - that may be another option..
Although you'll only know your speed after you process footage with Quik app.
What I find somewhat useful is that you can use the speed graph to fast forward to certain peaks, w/o viewing the whole thing..
like the jump here.. flying at 30mph directly downwind

I went with the cheap watch option, bought a Garmin Forerunner 15 on Amazon for like 50 bucks. It's one of the cheaper ones that is waterproof. Used it kiting for 2 years or so and it's still holding up great. Personally I'd rather take an inexpensive watch I don't mind smashing around than a $1000 phone that has my whole life on it, but that's just me.

I am using app Windsport Tracker on a phone. It has a enough of statistics for sessions, speed, distances, maps.
Phone I put in a waterproof bag, then I put it in the pouch on arm that runners use. And since I am kiting alone often- its nice to have phone with me all the time.

I have a Suunto Ambit 3. It is expensive, but very cool with a lot of apps you can add. Make sure you get the crystal front because it doesn't scratch.

I have the Forerunner 25, I think. Does the job but it updates its display kind of slow. Thought itd be more instant. Still a decent gadget.

Yeah, I think the 15 is once per second which is very not-realtime.
From what I've read, using gps is pretty battery-intensive, so more frequent gps updates = shorter battery life. The Forerunner 15 only lasts about 5 hours with GPS running, not sure how much better the more expensive ones are.
Personally I use it more for the tracking/distance and elevation gain (mountain biking/hiking), and usually just look afterward at what max speeds and such are.
I'm not sure how I'd see realtime speed, would have to be something mounted on a helmet right in front of my head or something
the watch is too hard to look down at when you're really hauling ass anyway

I have a Garmin Fenix 3. You can create your own app for kitesurfing with a large display for speed or set an alert if you exceed a specified speed. It's easy to create apps. Also you can set the GPS to update every second but it drains battery faster.
