Trust me, even super thin grip layer is better than nothing.
Smooth feeling is not the same as being soft. I know at least one body part that is smooth on touch but hard on grip
So, for one race, once a month, smooth might be ok, but training every day, soft(er) all the way.
But did you try it? Everyone has their own preferences, but you can't tell that you don't like it without ever riding it.
I trust myself, last two years on smooth carbon bars with 150 sessions+ per year. Even big air and megalooping besides racing and I wouldn't go back.

Bare carbon bars are perfectly fine - i prefer them to EVA grip. You just dont know from "just from seeing it"

No, don't have any blisters and don't know of anyone riding bare carbon bars that has. Also ride as much with bare hands as possible, meaning every day with 7deg C or more.
Bicicles and F1 cars have much more vibrations and forces involved compared to kiting so they benefit from some kind of shock absorbtion in the steering wheel.
The main reason to put some kind of layer on an aluminium bar, besides visuals, is for insulation as aluminium is a very good heat conductor while a carbon composite is an insulator. Meaning that a carbon bar does not suck the heat out of your hands and a naked aluminium bar does feel very cold.
Just look at SUP paddles, notice they also don't have any added grip besides a sanded coating on the carbon ones.

Same for me, have been riding bars with grip since 1999, tried a bare carbon bar last year and never looked back. Sure the feeling is personal and if sanded with 400 grade sand paper more slippy than eva but in a nice way. I ride almost everyday (surf/freestyle strapless and foil) all my bars (4) are now carbon. Never heard of anyone getting blisters and the light weight compared to a traditional bar (less than half) feels amazing.

Downy, do you ever saw some grip on carbon paddle? Blisters are not from material hardness.

So,
You guys do not get blisters?
Cmon, even a bare Cloud bar has leather grip. Yes, leather.
If u all claim bare carbon is soft on your skin, that is nothing less but a miracle. Whats is the shore
Hardness of carbon fiber? 95?
The “feel” of it does not make it less hard. What you guys are trying to prove is a carbon bar feeling...An bare alu bar is almost the same shore. Feeling is different. Same with wood, metal or plastic.
feeling is a subjective topic. Shore hardness is not. If bare carbon is that good, all carbon bicycles would have bare steering wheel. I do not see any.
Your turn...
blisters are caused by friction, not material hardness.
The carbon we are all discussing is a composite material. Composites have 2 constituent components, the fiber and the matrix. The hardness of a composite depends primarily on the matrix. If it is epoxy vs. urethane vs. nylon you will have very different hardness. But regardless, hardness is a meaningless characteristic of the properties of a kite bar, unless you are discussing impact to your face.
Bare carbon bicycle handlebars are very common these days.

Why do people think it’s ok to give ‘reviews’ on something they’ve never tried?
Not just here, happens a lot. Just curious.
