Core bar - correct trim

Postby BernieTomic1 » Tue Mar 12, 2019 8:22 pm

As the pigtails have asymmetric lengths between front and back lines, is the correct way to trim with the pigtails attached, or should they rather be removed and the lines trimmed at equal length?

Trim the lines to equal length

Any adjustment is then done on the knots/pig tails on the bridle ends

Yes, but the Core pigtails have a length difference of a few centimetres out of the factory.

If I trim the lines without the pigtails, there will be a length difference of several centimetres between back and front lines as soon as I put the pigtails back on.

I just tie loops to knots on pigtails and hang them on to a screwdriver to check the lengths.
If you then get "bar zero", that should work fine with all core kites connected to "suggested" 2nd knot on the bridle side. (no back stalling, etc)..
In my experience, the lines almost never stretch/shrink unevenly on new core bars.. You only have to do a lot of trimming when changing power or steering lines separately.. so I am guessing that's what you are after.

Cheers

So you suggest trimming with the pigtails. This is also what I thought would make the most sense.
Is it correct that trimming without the pigtails would let to a not correctly set up bar with the asymmetric pigtails attached?

My understanding is to trim the lines all equal without pigtails on
My understanding is that front lines pigtails are shorter a bit on purpose
Reasoning is that under kite power load the front lines will stretch to the point of matching the backs
Reasoning is that over time the back lines will have a tendency to shrink length so a bit longer pigtails is desired
It all comes out balanced in the end
All good

That seems to work for me..
I recently had to change a set when 2 power line pigtails broke on me on a jump..
Never gave it too much thought though.. not sure if different lengths are by design or just some deviations during production process.. Normally new bars appear to be well tuned. But if you think of changing lines, I strongly suggest changing a set of 4 and not 2, you will run in to all sort of issues when doing them 2 at a time (big difference in length, some stretching short after, etc)

That would mean that the bar is not properly trimmed out of the box as there is a 3-4 cm difference?

Look at it from bar designer point of view
He anticipates that all the lines will become even when the kite is flying and that's what you want
Smart

This is an interesting theory.
Stretching / shrinking may take time.
If I understand the process, dirt, sand and salt crystals get in between fibers making them thicker and shorter.
So are you saying that designer wants you to fly an untuned kite meanwhile?
