Do Twin tips get softer or flexier over time?

Postby gator1 » Sun Mar 17, 2019 7:00 am

On kites with heavy bar pressure or in over powered conditions I can feel the board undulating under my feet when riding over chop.

Never remembered feeling it before.

Do Twin Tip change flex over time?

I believe that yes. I know for sure that snowboards get more flex with time as you “break it in”. Many kiteboards are made by same technology and on same factories as snowboards, so completely possible that what you are feeling is actually true..

You should expect fiber/polyester composites to lose stiffness over time. Unless they are rather overbuilt.
Micro-fractures in the resin and some fiber breakage are involved. Epoxies used in boards have more toughness so they resist breaking down for longer.

Yes they do. Foam more so than wood because the core will break down over time. All so the sun is a killer to all plastics, paints, and rubber.

yes i think they do; however, anyone that has ridden a 12 year old twintip for example will be surprised how good it still is.

I bought an old slingshot board at cashies for $29, couldnt resist at that price, i really like it.

I know really good freestyle riders that have kept the same board for 5 years these days, they cannot even snap them.

The fact that they last so long make the business of selling kiteboards a very tough one!

Can’t confirm. Non of my boards got loose over time. And I really hang on to my stuff for many years. My aslingshot len10 is spiffy as well as the crazy fly and I only exchange my door as it got eaten during air travel

If you are the primary one riding that board, you will not notice it getting soft. If you use that board for a week, and then someone puts 100,000km through nasty chop the next day, you would notice it just a bit if you rode that board again.

If it is your board, don't worry about it. Flex varies more from one board model to the next, or even more from a "Thursday build" to a "Friday build" of the same model. Pretty much only a defective layup, or an extremely light weight build, will change flex noticeably over less than a few year period.
