14m 3-strut "lighter" wind kite recommendations?

Postby CaptainTech » Sun Mar 24, 2019 7:42 pm

Hi,
I'm in the process of narrowing the size range of my 3 kite quiver from 9m & 12m Cabrinha Radars (which I learnt on) and a 17m Cab Contra, to 9m & 11m Switchblades and a 14m 3-strut kite (not yet purchased).
The main reason is my girlfriend is now kiteboarding with me and we want to have a quiver we can share. I'm 84kg and she is 74kg so the thinking is when she is on the 9m I can be on the 11m, when she is on the 11m I'll probably want to be on a 13~14m. I also never once used the 17m Contra as I tend not to bother driving to the coast for marginal wind days + it was too big to travel overseas with.
I'm therefore happy for a 14m to be my biggest "lighter" wind kite that should hopefully cover me from 12 to 20kts. As its to be a lighter wind kite I'm thinking a less heavy 3-strut kite which will require less wind to stay in the sky than another 5-strut 14m switchblade.
I've scoured the net and this forum and can't find any useful 14m freeride kite reviews/comparisons and nothing on which are the better lighter-wind kites. Most reviews seem to focus on the 9-12m kites anyway with very little colour on the lighter wind performance of 14m kites in the range. I would therefore greatly appreciate thoughts on which 14m 3-strut kite to go for.

I'm currently looking at the Cabrinha Moto 14m, Core Nexus 13.5m and Ozone Enduro V2 14m but open to other suggestions.

We mainly kite on the UK south coast we'll probably look to add a 7m or 8m at some point.

I already have the 9m and 11m Switchblades so specifically looking for advice on the 14m rather than what is the right quiver.

Thanks in advance!

Ocean Rodeo Flite 14.5m is a great light wind kite.

The 2018 and newer models now have the same kite bridle attachment configuration ( loops of the kite's front bridle, knots on the back/steering bridle lines ) as your Cab kites, so would work on your Cab bars.

I second that. At about 220 lbs, it's becoming my go-to kite for San Diego winds with a high volume surfboard. Like Greg said, "Great kite"

I hardly used my 17m Contra for the same reason.
However I did use my 15m a lot.
After a recent change in kites I’ve gone back to a 15m Contra, as I wanted a good 3 strut, easy kite.
If you can stretch to a 15m there’s a decent offer here; it’s £900 on their front page;

Thanks! The 14.5m Flite looks v.interesting and seems wind range would overlap nicely with my 11m Switchblade.

Thanks! Reading about the Flite 14.5m it seems quite popular in San Diego!

Thanks! I'd thought about a 15m Contra but 15m probably a little big to sit above my 11m Switchblade, plus ideally want something a little faster than the Contra. Would love to get some views on light wind ability of Moto, Nexus and Enduro V2.

Try and get theguys at S2AS to organise a ride on a 13.5 Nexus, it's a great kite.

S2AS also sell Ocean Rodeo so you could perhaps demo a 14.5 Flite.

An Ozone Alpha is perhaps an option.

I did consider a 14.5m Flite for the coming summer but in the end decided on an Ozone Zephyr which has a pretty wide wind range and, importantly (for me), has no pulleys.

I flew the Moto 14 and like most 14s it was dull. I am an OR guy and do believe the Flites are excellent light wind kites...
