Twintip for choppy water

Hi everybody,

Want to add a board to my quiver,I have a Cabrinha XCaliber,and looking for a board that can handle well choppy water,was considering the Ace from Cabrinha.I would like to hear Your’s opinion to help me decide.

Does this mean that one board work for all condition,and if so does this mean that brand's are just using a different graphic but the board are all the same ?
I had a North X-Ride and it was beheaving way different then the XCaliber,or it's just me that I don't have a clou about board ?

If we’re talking about a twin tip then personally I’d say one good board should be fine for all conditions, excepting if you need / want a light wind board. Certainly boards ride differently, but a good board should perform well in all conditions.

Andy might have a point but why restrict yourself if you have the funds. I also have 4 guitars but could play all the music (or sounds ) on one

In general, flexible tips help the most with choppy water as they allow you to keep the rail engaged for longer. Exceptions to this are where the board itself is rounded (e.g. OR Mako).

Otherwise the rest of the board shape characteristics play more a part in how the board works for different types of use (lots of rocker usually for easier landings from freestyle moves, moderate rocker for freeride boosting with better upwind, low rocker for light wind boards for maximum edge to help with upwind performance).

Otherwise technique can help. Engaging more edge through a more balanced foot pressure often works better than keeping the weight over the back foot.

Sorry for the generalisation but haven't tried any of the Cabrinha boards but hopefully that is still helpful.

There may be some confusion regarding an 'all-round board' and a 'good board'.
You can expect an all rounder to perform reasonably well in a range of conditions, some better than other and some more biased towards a certain set of conditions.
Some of them could even be described as 'Good'.
A more specialised board like the Xcaliber isn't necessarily a bad board because it's designed to be optimal in certain conditions.
I had one and really enjoyed it.
I have had a number of TT's over recent years. Apart from a desire to change, it was driven by pain in knee from stiffer/harder boards.
I had a Cabrinha Tronic for a while, much easier on the knees and smooth in chop. The board needed to be larger in size and was more power hungry.
I missed the sharpness, unwind and direct feel of my C/F Elite so stuck with that and just kite when conditions aren't too bad for my knee.
The closest I came to one board ticking all my boxes was the Shinn BronQ, probably should have kept it.
Having a shed full of boards and taking the ones you fancy on the day, has got to be the way to go

Hands down the best board for choppy water is the Ocean Rodeo Mako, if you have chop and waves go for the 150 or King, if you just have chop then go for the 140. Trust me your knees will thank you!

Rocker is not always good for certain chop frequencies/amplitudes. Sometimes (NOT ALWAYSA) a more rockered board can ramp you up the chop more than you want to. A flatter board in the same conditions, would not naturally ramp up and lose contact with the water as much.

But it is also not a single equation variable with regards to the capabilities of the board. Here are just the ones I know:

1. size
2. outline
3. bottom contour (concave, channels)
4. rocker
5. flex
6. tip shape
7. rail shape
8. available stance options
(9. anyone think that fins affect chop performance?)


But I do agree, at least partially, with the first response that every board is a capable in chop. That is becasue of some additional variables that are not included above. Here they are:

1. Riders skill level
2. Riders approach (freeride, speed, freestyle)
3. Riders requirement/desire for speed (racing friends who have boards that are designed to handle chop)
4. Riders chosen stance option
5. Riders emphasis on higher jumps or smoother landings in chop


All of these go into the board equation and can be fudged to make a poor chop handling board work in the worst of chop.
