Ok, need might be too strong, but I want one so I am looking to you guys to help me decide on one that I can use for kiteboarding too.
Forget anything apple. Apart from that its an open field. I know I want it to do GPS tracking. Not sure if it needs to be extremely accurate, but if it could do multi-sport tracking like kiteboarding, swimming, biking, skiing, tennis etc.
I don't really know other things, but I imagine that connecting it to fitness tracking apps and calorie burning etc. would be nice. Other nice to haves are music controls and email / sms but priority is exercise tracking. Any insights on what made you make your choice would be very much appreciated.
If you have no interest in this, then here is an awesome song.
Check out Garmin Fenix. It comes with preloaded apps and it's easy to create your own. I created my own app for kitesurfing and kayaking. You can also upload your activities to Garmin Connect and share if you want to.

My Garmin Forerunner 920XT is designed for multi-sport (triathletes) and does most of what you want. There may be a more recent model. I've always used Garmin products because the GPS is reliable, heart-rate is accurate, and I want to track cadence on my bikes.

I don't care for Apple. I am also not going to discuss why here.
So the Garmin has been recommended by others, so I will definitely take a closer look at that. Looks stellar to me.
Irie, not sure how your Mrs, convinced you there is a low correlation between nice pussy and fitness tracker, but I would venture to bet, albeit not a high positive correlation, it is definitely not an inverse correlation.
Garmin Fenix. Had mine (version 3) for 3 years. Wear it every day. Use it for running, biking, surfing, swimming and on, one of my most valued pieces of equipment.
Get a modern one with HR on wrist.
Garmin product and support is second to none.
