Speed 5 vs. Soul

Postby JakeFarley » Mon Apr 08, 2019 10:47 pm

I'm looking at purchasing a 12m foil kite and I have compared the specs for these two kites. I ride mostly TT and surfboard, no foiling yet. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have owned both but prefer the Soul. Once in the air, there is not a really big difference in my opinion. I prefer the lighter fabric and the relaunch of the Soul, just a super easy kite to launch. I actually prefer the way the Sonic 2 flies, more at the edge of the window and a little more nuanced in stalling. The Speed 5 is a great flying kite and very durable and if you are using it on a TT, you will be flying it with plenty of wind, say more than 12 knots of something I would guess, so relaunch is not much of an issue. The relaunch thing is a big deal with a foil because with a 12m, you might be foiling in 8-9 knot wind and relaunch becomes more of an issue for any kite.

I have a soul 15 and speed5 9m, for sure the soul is much nicer, no bowtie issues, easier launch, power delivery is much more constant (but that may be also in big part because of the size difference).

If you are jumping and you mess up the jump the speed5 may collapse and tangle the edges in the bridles, super annoying to fix in the water.

Hi,
Got the soul 12m and speed5 9m. Super happy with the soul!
It's very stable, easy launch (fills up in half the time of speed).
Biggest performance improvments are turning speed and
power generation sheeting in the bar in my opionion.
In all a super easy, playfull, fun and addictive kite :D

7 knots is what Flysurfer says on their homepage... but that is maybe not considering big wings, so yes, 7knots should be very likely, maybe 6 but I think wind speed is hard to measure in those light winds (and also where you measure it).

I’m 80 kg and my minimum is 6 knots on a surf wing with my 12 Soul. But a race wing is better in these conditions but you need a bigger board.

I replaced my quiver of Speed 5 and Sonic 2’s with Soul.
In addition to better relaunch and turning, the Soul is more stable than the Speed. Perhaps, not a big deal for smooth ocean wind, but snowkiting or on inland lakes, it is a world of difference.

I did same...the only downside, and I mean the only one, is bar pressure. Souls are heavier in the bar feel.

less upwind is also a downside compared to Sonic 2
