Kite gear with Ryanair

Hello fellow kiters!
Does anyone have recent experience on how to travel with kite gear on ryanair the cheapest way? Currently my bag weights in at 25kg. 150x45x40cm. I am bringing a foil, twintip, 12m2 and a 9m2. Ryanair quoted me Malaga(Spain)- Tallinn(Estonia) 140€ for one way! They claimed this price applys when dimensions are more than 119x119x81cm which would the “regular sports equipment”. So i would have to pay for “large sports equipment” and 20kg would be the maximum weight. The flights to Malaga are with LOT airlines and they charged the normal ~50€.

Don't fly RyanAir, they are the worse in the industry and by supporting them you are just part of the race to the bottom when it comes to airline service, fees, etc etc etc

Ryanair are not worst. Their helping people to reach from point a to point b. I appreciate them for low prices. But in last years their prices going up of course

Hi Dude,

That sound more than the usual price for Ryan Air Large Sports Baggage. Are you taking multiple flights, or is it a direct flight. Normally Ryan Air Charges 70 Euros one way. But your bag is heavier than the 20kg normally allowed, maybe they added extra costs because of the weight?

The flights are Malaga-London-Tallinn. Do you think it will be risky not to pre-book and try to pay at the counter? Some of my friends have gotten their kite bags on ryanair as normal sport luggage...

On Ryanair Copenhagen-Teneriffe I paid for normal sports baggage, for 150cm golf bag. No problems at all. Just do not exceed on weight limit, 20kg is max. Sometimes they check and sometimes they do not I thing for large sports baggage they count windsurfing gear.

That would explain the high price. It's for two flights. So 70 euros each flight. You need to get your board bag under 20kg, or else it will get very expensive, or they may not even take it. Always pre pay with RyanAir. At the airport is too late and you may have to pay a lot more or not be able to take your bag.

Ryanair Excess Baggage. If your checked bag weighs more than 15kg or 20kg (depending on which you have booked), you may purchase excess baggage up to a maximum of 32kg and this can only be purchased at the airport ticket desk. Excess baggage will be charged at £10 per kg.
check in that 20kg bag without booking may cost £200 each way
or both ways for a 26kg bag= you do the maths, yikes!

Does anyone know how would this work if i pre-book a 20kg kitebag (140€) and then show up with a 24 kg? Would i just have to pay 4x10€ extra or would there be bigger problems? Taking an extra suitcase would cost me 60+ €

The website says:
Make sure you the bag does not exceed 20kg. Any passenger exceeding their personal checked baggage allowance will be charged for excess baggage at the rate prevailing on the day of travel. This is currently £/€11 per kilo (or local currency equivalent).

So it looks like you can pre-book and then turn up and pay the extra, however, this may draw attention to the dimensions of your bag and that could lead to them not taking it!
150cm versus 119cm limit - Hummm.......It'll all depend on the checkin/ticket sales desk on the day.

I have flown many different airlines around the world and have yet to find any of them to be as pedantic as Ryanair.

Can you pack it tight and get down closer to 119cm?
