Just read sad news...my condolences.
Sad day for the folly Beach kite family. We lost a pioneer yesterday after his kite death spiraling dragged him underwater for 9 blocks. He was on a 7m with about 30 knots of wind when the dreaded death spiral began. He was dragged ten blocks downwind before someone could get to him and pull him from water I personally believe his board leash (reel type attached to twintip) aggravated the situation and made rescue impossible
.anyone have any experience getting to the release of an unconscious kiter that's dragging his board behind him while his kite death loops. Wish as a community we could ban kite board leashes forever. Anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish this.

I heard that after they got the body on the beach they tried the QR. It had not be used but when they tried it, it worked. Apparently he just never pulled the QR.
Remember to practice using your QR at least one a week or a month. It seems stupid, right? You are thinking "I know how to use the QR don't lecture me" but practicing it makes it a lot easier to use if you get into a panic situation.
I know on the facebook entry they blame the leash but I'm not sure we are going to ever know what really happened.
My condolences to my friends and family.

difficult to use a QR if you are unconscious.
if you're gonna use a kiteleash....please wear a helmet.
(or better....dont use a kiteleash...and always wear a helmet)
/condolences to the family

Sorry to hear.
Maybe it was a stroke, cardiac arrest or some medical episode.
Who knows.
One thing I know, a death loop is so violent it might be described as riding a raging bull. Underwater.
Using anything in this scenario is like winning a lotto.

Rodney was close.kite buddy. All I was saying was the leash made.rescue difficult. Real problem was not being able to to pull his release. He was 75 and accident prone.the day had a Gusty build up rather quickly. Pretty sure he got knocked.out at the beginning and it was over.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’m also from Charleston, but I don’t kite at Folly very often and I didn’t know him. He sounded like a great guy.
What makes you think he was knocked out? And by what—his board?

You can get knocked out by a hard crash on the water too.

Agree, a kiteloop the wrong way is going to fling you up / down hard.
RIP.
