Yeah, I tried it last night with a 20cm tail and it still slipped. The outside line is 1.5mm Dyneema and I tried burying another piece of the same line, and also tried with a piece of thinner line. Slipped both times.

If I were to do it I would have the kite line go through the safety line closer to the kite and then the safety line bitter end tucked into the kite line, each about 10 CM.

I have also attached the safety line with a Prusik. It slips a little each time you release the safety and you have to move the knot back up the line to reset it.

Check this pdf for some splicing inspiration.

I feel quite stupid sorry as I can see the reason the splice will slip, as has been mentioned.

I did this many years ago and no longer use it, but it worked fine when I did. Tail is only like 5-7cm and stitched the entire length with quite short stitches like 2mm.

Right... the safety line is about 10m long and it is fixed permanently to one of the front flying lines (which are 21m long). The attachment point for the safety line is a little loop that seems to be spliced and/or sewn into the front line, obviously in a way that does not decrease the strength of the front line.

Trying to attach a picture but the editor is failing me.
How old are these kites? The last time I saw a mid-line safety was about 17 years ago.

Flysurfer still use this system. Its actually quite neat executed. Its also serve as stopper ball because bar cannot go past Y split.

I would buy a new line at 24m and run it as a 5th line, it will be similar parastic drag to the line you are making and much safer should you hit the safety. Put the kite up above you and adjust the length accordingly.

If the Prusik slips a little too much, wouldn't your bar hit the Y too early, meaning the kite would still be powered up?

Loved the Machovec link, really interesting.

...with a stopper ball or knot partway up the 5th line so the bar doesn't slide all the way into the bridle when you hit the QR... that could work.

I guess the flag line attachment point on Flysurfer frontlines relies on stitches for strength (looks just like foilholio's picture above), because all the midline splicing methods seem to slip.

Of all the options above, I like evan's the best: divide the front lines into two sections, join them with spliced loop-loop connections, and another loop-loop connection for the flagline. Sounds solid with no stitching or unnecessary line required.

There's actually a figure-of-eight tied into the flagline as a stopper knot close to the Y split, it's not the actual Y split that the bar jams against. Works great and you can usually put it all back together in the water and relaunch if you have to.
