That gear is obsolete junk, and unsafe by today's standards, it should be a crime for trying to sell it to you.

Save your money for lessons. then buy new gear on closeout from a shop.

Thanks everyone. I'm passing on this setup and found a local guy who is on this forum who is going to help me get a decent setup.
There is a lot of good used gear available on ikitesurf & other online sources. What you need is the knowledge to pick what is appropriate for your purposes. That takes a while to figure out. The first steps in learning to kite on the water are difficult & a bit daunting. Having the wrong gear will make it that much more difficult ... & possibly even unsafe.

Kitesurfing is 80% kite control - the board part is less important. The first thing you need to do is learn the basic mechanics of kite control & a good stepping stone to that is flying a small trainer kite as much as possible. It's fun, safe & doesn't really need the input of a teacher - you can learn the basics on your own with a trainer kite & youtube.

It would be like buying a POS mountain bike at Walmart if you wanted to learn how to downhill mountain bike.

It's not not good for anyone.
Don't get any kite older than 2009.
Really? there exists kites before 2009 as good and infact more advanced than today. There is plenty of kites pre 2009 that are just fine. You can kill and injured yourself nearly just as easy on modern gear as some older. Some older release and safety systems are quite suspect though, but then look at the "latest" release from Ozone, progress is NOT being made! What a piece of shit.

In general if you are starting and buying older or even new gear ask for help. OP has done well coming here.

As to the gear in question, the kite is not the best for a beginner, board is a bit small and the price is ridiculous. But like people did when that gear was new you could learn on it quite safely given the right knowledge or help. There exists much easier and safer gear to learn with though.

Smart move! Getting help, getting educated is the best thing you can do starting in this sport. If you are tight on a budget head down to the beach and talk to some kiters, watch them, learn. Read and watch on the net, take it slow and smart.

My advice for you to remember is keep your down wind clear because that is what you will hit. And Water is softer than Land!

Just buy at a real shop or kiteboarding school. I think this shop www.mackiteboarding.com it should be located near lake michigan would be good enough it also has a huge youtube channel with nice content. Like this if you want to "get into kiteboarding" & without taking any lessons at all which I and all others can't recommend.

OK, I am sorry and I might be wrong, but am I the only one that is thinking that Akosi is trolling all everyone. This is pretty common for some knowledgeable kiter to post " I see this deal on ebay for a 1999.., and i was thinking ...". It was funny the first time, but it is getting kind of old.
