What do I say when telling someone the windstrength? It was 30 knots or it was 30 knots with gusts to almost 40 or it was close to 40 knots? I was out between 3 and 4 pm.

Fuckin howling man, like my hair was all like WooOOoOOo and the tea was blown right out of my mug. I took my pants off and they flew into a tree. Man. You missed it. It was epic. Bleddy epic, man.

Alrighty kjorn, cheers.
Kinda on this topic ... when someone says he takes his 9 in 20 to 30 knots, does that mean with or without the gusts?

27 to 31 knots average - the gusts are probably pretty normal in this wind, so I would only mention this if extreme, otherwise the average wind is what we share around here.
Usually describing by what size I use, if shared with friends, then they will know exactly which size to pick depending on whether they are lighter or heavier or ride less or more powered by nature.

Describing wind strength by kite size is a kooky thing. It's 20 kn gust 25 and my very experienced pal is on a 4m on a surfboard, I'm on a 9m on a twintip, there's a 12 year old girl on a 5m and a 260lb middle aged man on a 12.
When someone asks me "hey what kite size should I bring", my answer is "Yes".
