Aluminum foil mast-fuse connection issues

Postby Jyoder » Sun May 26, 2019 2:48 am

Any ideas how to reinforce the mast/fuse connection on an old aluminum foil? I have the orange LF mast and the Stringfellow black hollow fuse that I’ve been riding with a DIY huge surf foil wing and keep sheering through bolts right at the joint, which is held by 2 m8 bolts. I don’t know if it’s the slight vibration from the imperfect wing, or the extra torque and force put on by the greater lever forces, or both. I’m not jumping or hitting bottom with it, But I ride it hard and really load it up now and then. I’ve been using SS type 316 bolts and half the time can get the broken end out with an extractor but have had to cut the mast down twice. Any ideas?

Switch to a slingshot mast to go with slingshot fuse is probably the way to go.
Make sure the bolts are lining up just right, first.
Solid fuse might help.
Different bolt supllier might help.
Titanium instead of stainless?

If nothing helps otherwise, relocating wing so it is farther back might help reduce some loads, but a big pain requiring retuning everything.

A smaller or lower span wing might help too, but maybe not what youre after.
