Wingsurfing Right of Way

1. Don’t be a dick
2. Yield to whoever will cause an accident.
3. When common sense fails, starboard tack is the actual rule. If you’re in starboard you have to keep going until past the danger. If on port you have to yield to avoid those on starboard.
4. In surf be extra nice and don’t get in the way.

As much as we might like for wingsurfers, kiteboarders, hydrofoilers, windsurfers, sailors and other floaty-windpeople to know, understand and respect the right-of-way rules written down in some very official volumes, a small dose of real-world practicality seems to be in order here.

Here's a thought. How about kiteboarders get their own house in order before worrying about Wingsurfers . By which I mean staying two kiteline lengths away from each other ( 50m - as we were all taught) in an onshore breeze instead of doing speed runs 10m away from one another . There's some frickin idiots around these days who wouldn't understand what port and starboard even refer to

It is just another sailing craft,.....

There is no such thing as just another sailing craft when talking about right of way.

More maneuverable craft yields to less maneuverable craft. This is foundational in maritime law, along with some other rules encompassing all vessels.


So, anyone know who is more maneuverable, and thus has right of way?

I may have misunderstood but if Matteo V has superior knowledge he has not used it very well imho. Imho it is a disservice to say that there is no such thing as another sailing vessel when talking of right of way. Clearly there is and this is the primary rule to consider in the case in question. ( Stbd stand on, windward keep clear etc )

Imho, Ability to manoeuvre is a secondary consideration when establishing right of way unless the vessel is displaying restricted manoeuvrability signals, however, it may well become the primary consideration if the situation becomes one of collision avoidance in which case both vessels should be making every effort to avoid a collision.

The real question is what do you do with a SUP rider holding a lilo?
