I read Giel takes his 10m Aluula Rise from 18-40 knots so I’m pretty sure the top end is fine lol:

That’s been my experience with the aluula kites too. Huge range, excellent from bottom to top. They all basically fly in 5mph…the question is will your board plane

Hi Greenturtle,
The purpose of the gold layer is to improve UV resistance and protect the Aluula core. The core weave is the integral structure of the composite (provides the impressive light weight to strength ratio). Aluula, like other materials does require some care, including minimizing UV exposure as best as possible (not leaving kites on the beach for unnecessarily long periods of time, packing kites up dry rather than wet, etc) Aluula does age over time with use, but the good news is that even when the gold outer layer shows signs of UV exposure and weathering (white lines showing through), the composite itself if not compromised - The core weave retains high UV resistance and structural integrity!
Personally, I've been running Aluula and HL-series kites through my kite school in Mexico and Vancouver Island since Aluula first became available, and have found both to stand up to the Mexican sun better than any dacron kites we've used in the past. Yesterday we got a full hour and a half head start on kite lessons before anyone else was able to get their students away from shore! Pretty impressive.
Happy to help directly with any questions as well - I'm one of the Ocean Rodeo reps and can also be reached via phone call or email (

The pictures look pretty bad. And i doubt it is only coming from the way the kite is folded. I have one of the first Roam 10. Over 2 years old… it has been put through pretty good use:75+ sessions. And the aluula seems to be the last thing that will give up on the kite. I have signs of wear and small repairs on the canopy, sign of wear on some of the sewing, velcro became useless on the valve cover, briddles start to look quite used… but the aluula part is stil very good. Yes it ages and does not feel as stiff as new but overall I’m impressed.
Used 50% salt water / 50% lake. Mainly foiling.
Actually in the latest iteration of aluula at AWSI they seem to release new aluula version with less uv protection to gain a bit of weight. I doubt they would be doing that if durability was becoming a problem on the first aluula kites…

Yeah if you have 75 sessions on one with no sign of that at all Pierrot then it must be something else more extreme than regular use. Thanks for the response.
Perhaps a nasty inside out taco, or line wrap abrasion, or both at once, a situation where a dacron LE may have failed and this held.

I have a lot of friends with Allula kites and I am considering buying one myself. I have seen this peeling of the gold coat on a few kites but nowhere near this bad usually just a few small spots. This kite must have a lot of wear if it was a dacron leading edge it would probably be in pretty bad shape too!

I run a repair shop, we fix Aluula kites. The kite pictured above, I am curious how many hours it has flown? What does the trailing edge on the canopy look like?

Just some random thoughts.
Aluula doesn’t strike me as a material that likes to be tightly folded. I’m going to try using sausage bags and rolling which is by the way what I normally do anyway
It’s obvious in retrospect but the very slippery leading edges slides easily on sand. Have to be more careful when it is windy.
Duotone claims they are using “ Utilizing an updated version of the Aluula fabric”
Whatever that means.
And this from Ken winner “ Another challenge with Aluula is that although it's extremely light and stiff, it stretches when you pump it up when compared to Penta TX in the new SLS, which doesn't stretch. Once you've hit your seven PSI it stops expanding and at that point, it's very stiff. But we still had to make adjustments to the canopy to allow for the stretch from the Aluula leading edge.”
It may not pay to over inflate aluula and it if you do it’s possible it is not good for the coating which may not stretch as much.
Just conjecture.

Hmmm. Im thinking possibly folded and twisted while pumped hard, such as in a wave munch scenario, in which case, it didn’t rip…
