I bought a 12m Flite Gold, flew it in 20 to 25 knot wind. I was not impressed, just okay for boosting, best boost was 12.3m. Felt like a handful, I could feel every gust. The kite did not feel particularly responsive either. Maybe I have it trimmed wrong?

Any ideas for improving the performance of this kite? I used a North Trust Bar, use it with all my other kites and it works great.

Thats probably your problem. You are using a high Y bar. The older flites (Gen4/5) did fly fine with a high Y bar but they also had 6 pulleys.

After gen 5 with the change to the low Y shift bar, the flites were optimised for a low Y bar.

I use a north click bar but removed the high Y split point. And it works perfect.

Other point to consider... a 12 in 20-25knt ? I’m sure the 12m aluula can handle it given the top-end of that kite. It probably felt very manageable but I don’t think this is the sweet spot of that kite. That wind range is 7m weather on TT for me at 80kg... so I can imagine a 12 was a handful... aluula or not...

If he weighs more or likes to do big airs, that would easily be the correct size. At 80kg a 12m is not a powerhouse at 20 knots (22mph).

I like using 12ms up to about 35 mph (31kts). Below 20mph I am generally not very enthusiastic about 12m kites. Granted I weigh about 250 lbs (113 kg) and many of my jumps avg over 40ft high with tricks added in.

Today I finally managed to do some proper foiling with the 10m roam.
I am still a beginner (2nd session) but I had a great time and am now able to go left and right now on the foil.
Wind started out at about 10 knots and went up during the session to about 15, maybe 20 knots.
I am really happy with the kite.
I can basically just forget about the kite and focus on the foil. Did not matter how much upwind or full downwind I went it just kept flying no matter what stupid things I did. No kiteloops needed to prevent it from falling out of the air.

To be fair I am used to XR5/6 and you can very easily outrun those going downwind even on a twintip.

So you boosted 12.3m on your first outing using a new-to-you kite model, in 22.5knots wind; in what world is that unimpressive? Kota? Seriously tho, the flites are not gust eaters and are not marketed as such either. Im not a gold owner but have used the dacron flites for years, they can be spikey/sensitive in strong gusty /shifty wind. Never stopped me from liking them best though. Definitely use a low v line setup next time as others suggested, thats what OR kites are designed around. Responsiveness should be top, definitely is on the dacron ones.

I appreciate the recommendation of using a low y bar. I will buy one and give it another go.

I'm considering getting an Aluula Roam 8m, and am wondering what brand/model of bar to get for it. Is the Ocean Rodeo bar for this kite any good, or does anyone have any other better quality recommendations?

After my session today on a 5m Aluula Roam in very punchy 25 - 35 knot / 14 deg. C wind, I expect new high-aspect Aluula kites will dominate future kite speed competitions. I certainly have a new favorite storm kite.

Looking forward to flying this kite in tamer conditions on foil.
