Fortaleza Nov Trip Info

Postby irwe » Tue Jul 02, 2019 11:52 am

We are planning a Kite trip to the Fortaleza area in Mid November.
There will be 5 of us (two non-kiters)
Looking for a spot about 1 hour drive from Fortaleza.
Waves for Surfboard & Foil (intermediate to expert riders)
Accommodation close to launch.

Any recommendations for spots, accommodation, tips appreciated.

Best Wave spot is Paracuru. But no accommodations on the beach...need to drive to get there.

Taiba also gets a nice wave, here you can find places on the beach...Google it

Cumbuco is the sure thing. Lots of restaurants, acomodations and supermarket around. Everything close by. Although it can get busy on the water. If you want to avoid the crowds there are options away from the city center like Windtown and Hotel Golfinho.
For a group of 5 I would recommend Drem Village condo or Drem Beach condo where you can get the full apartment.

Taiba is another hour after Cumbuco and is more relaxed and quiet than Cumbuco. There is also a lagoon and very wide beach. Altough not so many accomodations at the beach. I am typing this laying down at the Villa da Praia. French pousada right in front of the lauching area. Great restaurant inside also.
For the non kiters it can get a bit too quiet.

My favorite on the list is Guajiru. 3 hours from Fortaleza and even more quiet. Top level pousada called Vila Vagalume is the place to be. Great for downwinders.

Ilha do guajiru is a flat water tied dependent spot with nice pousadas near the water. Pura vida and locanda del venti are some nice places to stay.
The raining season made the road a lot worse with plenty of holes making you drive slower and more cautious so if not fixed by november consider not driving at night after cumbuco. Until there is fine.

Finding the combo of waves and beachfront pousada is difficult in Brazil.

Wind is strong for foiling, at 90kg I often use 8m on tt,mostly 9m, rarely 10. Dont think you will foil on light days, they dont happen in Nov and if they do you will want/nead a break.

Paracuru to my knowledge the only place there is a reef with a break. The spot is 10-15 min away from everything (but has a restaurant).

Taiba is sand bar/beach break and can get quite rough. Lagoinha has easyer waves but still beach break. Between both would suggest Logoinha. Expect to drive and test these 3 spots on your first trip. Paracuru will be the most crowded. Expect to adjust your kiting to the tides, they are quite important and change conditions significantly.

You may want to consider 2 cars for 5 people, one for the kiters the other for those to roam a bit. Once out of Fortaleza driving is cool during daylight hours. Getting out from the airport an adventure, dowload maps prior to your arrival. GPS is awfull in For. I suggest you take a local sim card to acces internet for driving and access a translator app.

Enjoy, I will be in Paracuru in Nov. My girlfriend and I ride Nomad rounded wave tt’s, we are easy to spot, flag us if you come.

Lagoinha has a nice wave upwind...turns around the corner. Same as Taiba (Taibinha).

You can find all spots of the area here: https://se.kiteforum.com/spots

I've foiled at a spot 1,5 hrs southeast of Fortaleza. Waves are ok for foiling, you can go upwind to spots no one else can reach. Waves for surfboard on kite are not good. It's not a place for non kiters, nothing else to do. Parajuru.

i'm exploring a similar trip around the same time...but would be 100% foiling.
preference is an ocean swell over flat water.
no more than 2 hours from FOR airport.

which spots are best for foiling?
(ideally with accommodations directly on beach)

Do you want to ride waves with the foil or just ride?

Its difficult to give direct advice, without knowing one's preference...
Me for example, I enjoy foiling in high wind and have been foiling NE Brasil the past 3 years.
(80kg)
I'm in Taiba now... where getting through the beach break is a challenge, after that its all good.

Cheers

yessir
i would like to ride waves where available (i'd take a foilboard and short/long mast sizes)
